Augmented Reality Zombie Shooter:

http://tr.im/oObU

Basically, a mobile-camera phone game where you use the phone's camera (powered by an Nvidia GPU, of all things), to see the real world in the eyes of some dude on helicopters. Your mission is to kill the zombies in the real world as told by the phone (makes more sense in the video).

Also, it turns out that candies kill zombies

This reminds me of Charles Stross's book Halting State. His near-future fiction is coming to life!

game-related talks @ TED

These are some videos from my favorite web site - TED (http://www.ted.com). Great place for great minds to come together to start doing great deeds.

Talks Stuart Brown says play is more than fun (2008). Available: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/stuart_brown_says_play_is_more_than_fun_it_s_vital.html

Talks Will Wright makes toys that make worlds (2007). Available: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/will_wright_makes_toys_that_make_worlds.html

Rant: Just because its indie, doesn't give reviewers to use "its just indie" as an excuse for bad graphics/art.

it's a low budget art style, but i think it looks pretty effin sweet!

Four million play Mafia Wars daily

Wow. I generally tend to ignore any facebook apps just because they're a timesink I don't really need, but this certainly has me intrigued:

4 million's not a number you can sneeze at.

On water/swimming. I remember having my character swim for hours in oblivion to increase his athleticism. I left a paperweight on the "up" button while dozing off and letting him do all the work!

A dialogue between Jason Rohrer and Chris Crawford:

http://www.offworld.com/2009/07/weekend-watching-even-further.html

It's an hour long video on game design, but definitely good food for thought.

Watching through that video made me want to read up on Chris Crawford, and I found this intriguing article, or rather a chapter from a book he wrote:

http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=99710

He's certainly an iconoclast, and I can't say I agree with all his ideas, but he does give you some interesting thoughts to wrap your head around.

techZING! 10 – AI War

Thought this might be interesting for the programmers.

Justin and Jason talk with Christopher Park, founder of Arcen Games and developer of a space-based RTS game called AI War: Fleet Command, about how he was able to release a sophisticated computer game in under seven months and create a formidable artificial intelligence in only a matter of weeks. The discussion also covers the marketing of an independent game, cooperative game play, multi-threading, optimizing .NET, LINQ, GPUs, SlimDX and the future of artificial intelligence.

I've always felt that there should always be an easier way to create 3d assets, this video shows a promising alternative:

They are real Wizards! Living in the Coast. Making Magic.... distributed to other duelers. Also, if you look at the back of a card, it was designed to look like a tome. So when you draw from your deck, you pull from your book of spells. Surprise

The art of King Of Fighter XII.

They talk how they made the art (pixel artists rejoice). In addition, you can view the individual animation on each character frame-by-frame and at 100%, 200% or 400% (!) scale.

Legally free, I wish to add.

Indeed. I'd download daggerfall now except...well...I'm still playing Fallout 3.

I haven't seen character mods like this done since HL1. It's also one heck of a cute Prime!

That is a really cute Prime.

On the free games trend, Mechwarrior 4 and its expansion is being released for FREE! Mechwarrior 4 was the last mechwarrior game of note and I remember playing it back in 2002 or so and loving every second of it. If you're a fan of big mech and micromanaging your weapons payload, keep an eye out for this release!
