Games: the bastard children of popular media

Location: Dave and Buster's (183 and MoPac)
Date/Time: March 10th, 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Dear Austin,
I wanted to write, and let you know that your next meeting will be in two weeks. And it will be AGD’s last meeting for a while. Everything changes and it’s no different for the AGD. Our lowest point was one year ago, when ten people attended a meeting. But we’ve had an incredible year since. Attendance was nursed back to life, drawing seventy-five to ninety people out to Austin Studios throughout the summer for each meeting. It’s been a good run, a lot of fun, but developer participation was never what it should have been. That’s why the organization is changing. All of us love living in Austin, and making games here. We want to keep doing just that. But we’re subject to forces beyond our control. Austin Game Developers has good relationships and connections with the people who want to see that Austin becomes and remains, a leading center of development. We’ll be talking to some people. We welcome the participation of developers, and would like to hear from you. I trust we can keep jobs from leaving, create new ones, help people see Austin in a new light. It’s important enough to try. But before that happens, we’ve still got one event left. And it’s going to be pretty nifty. You can find all the details here:

Roger Ebert’s comments from late last year has once again brought up the subject of Are Games Art? which is a debate that never ends. That in itself is a tired topic, but the repercussions are something rarely debated. Why does it make some of us mad? Do we want these games to be art? Can it hurt us if they are “visually wonderful, but ultimately worthless.”..? Does the artfulness of games actually mean something tangible to the industry? That’s what I want to know, and what will be answered at the meeting on the 10th. It’ll be a good meeting. I’ll be there. And I hope that you will be, too.

Sincerely,
Quoc Tran
President, AGD
