How To Make Games Fun

The most recent Austin professional developer gathering was held at Midway studios on April 11th at 7pm. Once again, food was catered by Macho Taco and complementary liquor/bartending services were provided by IGDA-Austin. Approximately 140 professional game developers attended this meeting, setting a new record for any game developer organization gathering in the history of Austin, Texas.

Bioware's Gordon Walton hosted a panel of speakers to discuss How to Make Games Fun!

The panel of speakers was made up of...

  • Chris Cao – Creative Director at Sony Online Entertainment
  • Harvey Smith – Creative Director at Midway-Austin
  • Richard Garriott (Lord British) - Executive Producer at NCsoft

Slides from the panel discussion can be found here:

It has been exactly one year since the organization known as Austin Game Developers was disbanded and rebirthed as IGDA-Austin. It goes without saying that none of this would have been possible without IGDA-Austin's Board of Directors, who have guided this organization and provided more than 80% of the funding out of their own pockets over the last year.

Aside from the four officers of IGDA-Austin, there have also been some unsung heroes behind the scenes of these events that deserve specific mention:

  • Alan Kane has been a key factor in our ability to even have these events by opening the Midway facility to all of Austin's developers
  • Mark Richards of Midway has been key in leading the setup/teardown team and handling all audio/video needs at the Midway facility for all of our developer gatherings so far
  • Bryon Lloyd of Multimedia Games is invaluable as the official bouncer of our events
  • Aaron Walker of Retro Studios provides the proof of IGDA-Austin's activities through his keen eye with the camera lens
