Bioware Seeks Database Administrator

BioWare Austin seeks candidates for a Database Administrator role in our new Austin, Texas studio for BioWare's first Massively Multiplayer Online game.

The Database Administrator will develop and maintain database infrastructure components for online games. This job requires a high level of expertise in administration, development, backup, recovery, and tuning of database components. This position requires both operational and development DBA capabilities. The successful candidate must be able to plan, implement, and maintain DB operational services as well as develop database architectural and script based components. Oracle DBA, PL/SQL development, Unix administration & scripting as it pertains to a DBA, and perl scripting are the primary skill sets of this job, but other database experience in open source databases such as Postgres, MySQL, EnterpriseDB are required as well. Past experience as an Oracle DBA in a production environment and warehousing experience is required. This position must have the ability to operate independently with little direction and contribute new expertise and knowledge to an environment already populated by experts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain database infrastructure components for online games including such things as game persistence systems, login servers, in game systems (help, rewards, metrics), reporting systems, billing, registration, etc. This may eventually require on call periods with a pager. This includes backup and recovery, ongoing tuning and maintenance, traffic/capacity planning, database security, and high availability services.
  • Develop and maintain a robust backup and recovery system
  • Develop new database infrastructure components for online games
  • Develop & maintain automated database monitoring solutions
  • Develop & maintain warehouse based BI solutions
  • Develop & maintain automated metrics and reporting solutions for both game and business systems
  • Contribute to standards, process, and procedures and set new innovative precedents
  • Work with game developers to interface game components with databases through packages and procedures
  • Help teach developers best practices when developing to database

Experience and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field

DBA requirements:
  • Oracle (7+ years experience)
  • Production DBA experience as an operations DBA
  • Expert with backup and recovery solutions including planning, implementing and periodic evaluation of backup/recovery (offline/online) strategies, RMAN, recovery catalog, fast recovery strategies, and interfacing with third party products and hardware
  • Expert with SQL level tuning
  • Expert with instance level tuning
  • Expert in storage tuning
  • Expert with replication based solutions
  • Significant knowledge of Oracle internals
  • Capacity planning and traffic modeling
  • Conversion of Oracle to and from open source offerings such as MySQL, Postgres, EnterpriseDB
  • Experience with clustering technologies (shared & shared nothing)
