BioWare Austin is seeking 3D artist candidates with meticulous modeling and texturing abilities to do level / environmental art. The position of Environment Artist will help create BioWare’s first Massively Multiplayer Online game.
The successful candidate will:
Have the ability to consistently create compelling and aesthetically pleasing environments in any given style. The SEA will possess an exceptional understanding of form, shape, and structure and a superior eye for light, shade, color, and detail, environment artists model, texture, and integrate a diverse range of manmade and organic environments based on concept art and their own creative instincts.
BioWare, the newest member of the incredible family of EA studios, has created some of the world's best-selling titles including the award-winning Baldur's Gate™, Neverwinter Nights™ series, and Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™. Original BioWare-created IPs include Jade Empire™ and the critically acclaimed, Mass Effect. BioWare is hard at work on the epic fantasy RPG Dragon Age™; Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood™ for the Nintendo DS™; and unannounced projects including a highly anticipated massively multiplayer online game.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creates a high quality 3D resolution environment to include, assets, texturing, and lighting.
- Creates models of 3D environments, mapping predefined textures and creating new textures.
- Closely follows art and design concepts.
- Integrates assets into game.
- Participates in visual comparisons and critiques. 6
- Analyzes environmental content and provides direction for final polish.
- Uses commercially available digital art software competently.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s (BA) degree from an accredited 4-year college or university or equivalent industry experience preferred
- Up to three years in game development, with an understanding of Real time Graphics issues, shipping one or more titles
- Proficient knowledge of MAX and/or other 3D software package, Photoshop, Z-Brush
- Ability to work within a style, including a style set by another artist
- Solid understanding of color theory, and be able to create balanced & appealing color palettes
- Experience using proprietary editors, software and tools
- Skilled at modeling supporting assets with or without concepts and designs
- The ability to create custom materials and all associated maps (bump, normal, parallax, spec, etc.) for new or existing assets
- Understanding of material shaders and proprietary tools
- Thorough understanding of architecture and nature
- Solid understand the aesthetics of environment, function vs. form relationships, as well as what makes a game level fun and intriguing
Portfolio Requirements
All portfolios must contain a detailed shot breakdown of the work. It must be very clear what you, the applicant, are responsible for in your reel, screenshots, scanned pictures, web page portfolio, etc. We would also like you to include your name in the subject line of your emailed application, as well as the competition number of the position(s) that you are applying for.

- Modeling, texturing, applied to the human figure, animals, or character designs.
- Unwrapped textures applied to buildings, characters, and organics.
- Effects animation both natural and fantastical.
- Various animations applied to ambient objects and characters.
- Examples demonstrating strong painting skills
- Architectural rendering.
- Color work and examples of tonal coordination.
- Environmental design both interior and exterior.
- Figure drawing.
- Conceptual drawings applied to architecture, natural environments, props, etc.
