The HBMG Foundation Double Dares You to Create Art with the Big Kids
The HBMG Foundation is excited to announce the 2008 ArtSpark
Festival's Call for Applicants. Run wild inside our creative
playground, but don't forget to play nice during this twelve week
collaborative competition, beginning May 26th and concluding August
17th.
The rules of the game are as simple as 1-2-3-4...
-
1.) Start with nothing.
2.) Use a piece of visual art to "spark" the creation of a video game
or play.
3.) "Spark" a new piece of visual art with the development of the
play or video game.
4.) Finish with a public showcase of your work and the chance to walk
away with a cash prize!
Don't forget to enjoy the toys that the HBMG Foundation gives you
along the way; a budget, workspace, industry workshops, and equipment to help facilitate the process.
But wait, there's more...
Musicians are invited too!

TXMPA Meeting at St. Ed's - SATURDAY. Get Out And Vote!
Austin gamers urged to attend TXMPA meeting Saturday, June 30, 10:00 am at St. Edward's University. Your vote is needed!
The Texas incentive program would not have been possible without the Texas Motion Picture Alliance (TXMPA), a statewide network of volunteers who lobbied the Texas Legislature to pass the bill. Despite its name, TXMPA encompasses more than films. Video game developers played a role in the group this year, but a much stronger game influence is needed if we're to build upon the recently passed incentive program and expand its impact in the next legislative session.

TXMPA Announcement
With a stroke of the governor's pen earlier this month, a game and film industry incentive bill became law. What does that mean for us as game developers? Any project spending more than $100,000 in-state is eligible for a 5% cash incentive, with a cap of $250,000, from the State of Texas. While this is not a staggering amount, every bit counts, and, more importantly, the mere fact that we now have an incentive program on the books is a huge accomplishment.

Next Generation: Why choose Austin?
Raphaël Colantonio: Most of our favorite games were made here, so it felt natural. Also, the cost of labor, the online expertise and the fact that I personally like the place.

NCsoft Reports Significant U.S. Layoffs
"NCsoft's Austin business has announced an immediate restructuring within its organization that included the difficult task of reducing members of its workforce. The online games industry is one that is continually changing with the scaling up and down of business based on product launches and product development schedules. Over the past two and a half years NCsoft has launched six major titles into the North American market and has grown with each title launch.
...
As the company continues to grow its live products and prepares its next set of major online game releases for later in 2006 and 2007, the company sees a slowdown in its launch pattern and the need to streamline its business. For this reason, NCsoft has reduced its 300 person workforce in Austin by approximately 70 people to accommodate this change. This decision has no impact on the schedules of any projects currently in development and service to NCsoft's current games will continue without interruption."
