Lead Game Designer

Amaze Entertainment Austin seeks a Lead Designer for a high-profile Nintendo DS title. Amaze is located in the heart of downtown Austin, within walking distance of restaurants, theaters, hike and bike trails, and music clubs. Amaze is an active member of the Austin game development community. With four teams focused on the Nintendo DS, our studio is collaborative, flexible, social, and professional.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading and directing a small team in envisioning, prototyping, communicating, implementing, and balancing a design for Nintendo DS software
  • Working with the team’s producer and other leads to prepare and manage project schedules
  • Collaborating with other talented teammates to create great games

Requirements:

  • Work closely with client designing the game to ensure a shared vision and quality expectations.
  • Manage and direct small team with the conception and implementation of the game vision.
  • Strong communication and management
    skills a must.
  • Strong understanding of game mechanics, emotional/psychological involvement, risk/reward systems, level design, balance, and all other facets of video game design.
  • Work closely with artists to achieve appropriate visual style.
  • Work closely with programmers to build tool sets and functional gameplay/systems.
  • Work with other game designers to implement, balance, and tune gameplay.
  • Ability to collaborate with others on achieving a great gameplay experience.
  • Three-plus years’ experience, and at least two shipped titles in a designer capacity.
  • Level editor and 3D modeling software experience a plus.
  • Communicate the game vision using any and all necessary tools.

Preferences:

  • Three-plus years professional games experience with multiple published titles
  • Handheld console game development experience, such as Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS
  • Rapid prototyping skills a major plus
  • A great sense of humor

  • Working with level artists to maintain integrity of both gameplay and presentation
  • Working with programmers to build the tools needed to produce the game's play spaces
  • Working with other game designers to help build all other facets of the game's design
  • Collaborating with other talented teammates to create great games

Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills a must.
