Board Blog - IGDA Starts Healthcare Program!
The IGDA has long served game developers as a source of professional growth and industry advocacy. We are probably best known for providing a framework for networking and knowledge sharing through local chapter events and industry events like the IGDA Leadership Forum. However, as a professional association, it’s also incumbent upon us to support the community in direct, practical ways too, especially as we all work through this economic downturn.
One of the biggest challenges facing independent and consulting developers particularly in the US is the skyrocketing cost of health insurance. Large corporations have the benefit of collective bargaining to help lower rates for employees, and so we are applying the same principles to deliver to you the benefits of group insurance, solely on the basis of your IGDA membership.
Largely through the tireless and cheerful efforts of our dynamic new Executive Director Joshua Caulfield, we are incredibly proud to announce the IGDA Healthcare Program. The IGDA HP grants you access to the IGDA group account with Association Health Programs, a national US brokerage that negotiates and presents the best available insurance offerings from leading health insurance companies. Starting in January 2010, you will be able to connect directly with an account executive who will generate a set of group-negotiated healthcare options, for you to choose from. As January gets closer we will work to have more details and specifics about this program. In the meantime here is a starter FAQ we can share with you:
Who can join the IGDA HP?
Any IGDA Member in good standing is eligible for the IGDA HP. Regular membership dues are $48 per year, and hardship membership dues are $25 per year.
Is the IGDA going to be my health insurance carrier?
Not directly. The IGDA is working with Association Health Programs, a broker for many different insurance carriers across the US. By being an IGDA member you will gain access to group rate plans provided by national “A” rated carriers. Your health insurance will be through one of those carriers, and the IGDA HP should give you access to a lower rate than you would have if you were to obtain health insurance on your own.
What will my health insurance cost?
Since this will vary for each case, there isn’t an answer to that question yet. It will depend on a wide variety of factors and you will have to wait until the plan is running before you can see what the final cost is to you. You will have access to a group rate, so your cost should be lower than what you could obtain individually.
Will I be excluded for pre-existing conditions?
As with any group health insurance policy you should not be excluded for pre-existing conditions.
I am an International member, when can I get health insurance?
This plan is currently available for US members only. Most of our non-US members live in countries with nationalized health care systems so there is less need, or value in making this available to members in those countries. Following a successful launch of the program in the US, we would be interested in looking into this for other countries. If you would like to help with that process please let us know.
Will dues increase as a result of the IGDA HP?
No, the membership rate will remain the same. The IGDA HP is an optional benefit that US members can choose to take advantage of. Members will be fully responsible for paying their own health insurance premiums. The IGDA HP simply gives all members access to group rate plans.
If you have any other questions please let us know or post them in the comments below and we’ll try to respond to them or get answers as we can.
Finally, we thank you for your patience with us, while we’ve worked through some unexpected organizational issues. However, our main focus has been, and will continue to be, on empowering and improving the professional advancement of you, the game developer. We expect that the IGDA HP will be an effective example of this core goal, and we look forward to sharing a toast when we see you at the next IGDA event.
To your health,
IGDA Board of Directors

COBRA issues
Okay, this sounds very enticing for a lot of people, but I have an important concern:
I'm on COBRA right now, with medical benefits I got from my former employer (very good benefits), and I don't pay that much b/c I qualified for aid - 65% off thanks to the American Recover and Reinvestment Act. I believe I will be disqualified from both once I become available for a different plan. Do you believe that could happen once the IGDA's health care plan goes into effect?
It could be that I would have better benefits on IGDA's plan, but I won't know for sure.
Thanks,
Chris Pioli
PS: Thank you for this program, by the way. Although it comes at a bad time for me, I am sure to take it into consideration later in life. I am glad something like this exists, especially for independent and small developers.
Student Members
I've been considering joining IGDA for a long time and this might be the thing that pushes me to finally do so. I just have a few questions. Will the plan be available to student members as well, or just the regular members? Second question, do you have to be a member for a certain period before you qualify for the insurance? I saw that any member in good standing is eligible, but only the normal and hardship fees were listed. I'm currently attending classes at Full Sail University and I've been a contract tester (no insurance) for a few years so something like this could really help out my family. I really think that this is a great idea and will go a long way to provide a needed service to many families that are otherwise unable to afford it. Any information you can provide will be appreciated.
Great question. It is my
Great question. It is my belief that this program would not disqualify you from COBRA coverage, or the AARA subsidy, but I'll try to find this out for sure. I'm actually in exactly the same situation myself so it's definitely a concern for me too!
Greg, All members will be
Greg, All members will be eligible for this coverage. How you have your membership is not a concern or a consideration, so yes, student members are also elgible. The only people not eligible are users, those who only have an account on our website, but aren't actual members.
GREAT news!
I'm really glad to hear about this program. I was on CAL-COBRA, but the company under which I qualified for the program recently dropped their healthcare benefits. This left me with little choice but to buy an expensive, unsubsidized plan through my wife's employer. It's a group plan, but the group skews old and sick, so the costs are relatively high. With the scope of the IGDA's membership, and its relative youth, I imagine it will be possible to offer a relatively affordable rate. At least, I hope so. If it is, and it's a comparable plan to the PPOs commonly offered here in California, I'll be the first to climb aboard.
Any idea if spouses will qualify?
Great news!

Roane, you'll have to wait
Roane, you'll have to wait until this is up and running and can speak to an actual broker in order to know the final plans available and their associated costs. It should be group rate, which is almost guaranteed to be better than you can get on your own, but may or may not be better than any other group rate insurance you may have access to. Plans should be in line with any other provider, so yes, spouse and dependent coverage should be available.
Oh wow
As someone with a disastrous "Pre-existing condition" repetoire going on ten months with a broken tooth and a smattering of moles that look very troublesome to somebody with a family history of malignant melanoma, this may be the best news I've heard all year.
Whoever set this up, THAK YOU!
I'm looking forward to it.
Hopefully, enough people will buy in to keep the rates low. We'll see; my current rates are absurdly high.
Best,
Roane
Fantastic
Frankly when i spoke to one of the board members at AGDC and they said they were working on this i didn't expect to see it happen.
I'm very glad to be wrong!
Spouse Coverage
Will spouses of members be eligible for coverage under this plan?
Robert Madsen
Spouses and dependents should be eligible
The plans you will have access to are the same as any other plans, they will just be available at group rates. This means that your spouse and dependents should be eligible too.
Beyond Health?
vision, dental, life, AD&D? (btw, not referring to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons)
Really?
I'm a little skeptical. Based on this description, anyone with expensive health insurance could save hundreds or thousands of dollars a year just by joining the IGDA $25. It also makes it sound like someone with no health insurance and, say, inoperable bile duct cancer could save themselves $2 million,a nd maybe their lives, just by joining the IGDA.
I'm sure there are some benefits, just not perhaps as much as are suggested.
Group Rate access not a subsidized plan
Good point Mick, and there's definitely some potential confusion here. To be clear, this will not be a subsidized plan. This means that each individual is going to have to pay the full cost of their health insurance (which is likely much higher than most people realize unless they've had to pay the full amount for their own health insurance before). If you are currently receiving health insurance through your employer it is highly likely that a large portion of your health insurance cost is paid by them.
Further, while the exclusions for pre-existing conditions should be very minimal (if at all), that does not mean that pre-existing conditions will not affect the cost of your health insurance.
Ultimately this plan should offer individuals access to group rates, which they would otherwise not have access to. This means that rates are almost guaranteed to be lower through the IGDA HP than if an individual were to get an individual plan directly from an insurer. Those rates may or may not be significantly lower than that person's current coverage. The 3 big points of value are: Independents who can be part of a group, Uninsured members who don't have access to health insurance directly at reasonable rates, and business members who want to shop around.
IGDA HP does not disqualify you from COBRA
The IGDA HP is an optional health insurance plan not one provided by an employer, and as such it should not disqualify you for COBRA. For most members that have recently gone onto COBRA coverage this means you will likely want to remain on your COBRA plan if you qualify for the ARRA subsidy. The IGDA HP will still be here for you when your COBRA coverage ends.
Thank you for your comment, Brian
Brian,
Thanks for the comment. I just discussed this with my COBRA provider moments ago, and their representative concurs with your assessment.
Small Developers?
Can small developers sign up through the IGDA to get better large group rates as well?
With all the unemployed people out there now, I expect before long we'll see small new studios start popping up everywhere. Giving these studios access to large group health care plans could be a huge stimulus for the those companies.
Plan is available for Studio Affiliates too
Peter - yes, the plan will be available to IGDA Studio Affiliates as well. So individual IGDA members will have access to it, as will any developer that is a studio affiliate.
When does this start?
This post mentions that the program will begin in January 2010 but I haven't heard any news about it this month. When will this service begin?
Health Care Available?
I've been poking around trying to find out who to contact about IGDA HP, but can't find anyone. Who do I contact?
