Meeting Report

Art & Audio Galore
February 2002
by Teresa Stankiewicz

Our February meeting was a great event! The evening started with our host Red Eye Studios giving us a short demo of motion capture. They already had a guy suited up and ready to show us in real-time how the whole thing works. They were able to place a game type player image onto the motion to give us an idea of how to use motion capture. Then the team showed us some of their more spectacular files and how they actually captured that stuff.

Then Darryl Duncan from GameBeat talked to us about his company and how they provide music for games, web pages, etc. His recording studio is state of the art so they are able to create a wide variety of music and sounds for clients. He played a demo of his music for us and left CDs for us to take home. There was everything from rap music to instrumental to sound effects! Check out his incredible web page at www.gamebeatinc.com.

Finally our sponsor Softimage demoed their new tool XSI 2.0. This tool is an incredible non-linear 3D animation system. We got to see all the features, how they work and what an artist can do with it. I can't begin to describe all the things this system is capable of, not being an artist but it looks like half the worries are taken care of with this tool so animators can get on with the art! Many thanks to Bryan Milne and his team for the demo and free beer. Kudos to Vince Guzman and team at Red Eye Studios for hosting.

There were several new people at this meeting. I forgot to take pictures but a wide variety of programmers, producers, students, artists, and more are part of our group now that all of you should meet. Be sure and attend the next meeting to talk with everyone.
