Meeting Report

Quality of Life For Gamers
June 29, 2004

Sheri Pocilujko spoke at our June IGDA meeting on Quality of Life for Gamers. Some statistics the Quality of Life white paper uncovered were as follows:

  • 34.3% of gaming employees expect to leave the industry in 5 years, and 51.2% expect to leave in 10 years.
  • Only 1 in 10 developers has over 10 years of experience.
  • 38.1% work an average of 46-55 during a normal work week, and 19.7% work over 55 hours in a normal work week.
  • In crunch time, 30.4% work 55-65 hours, 35.2% work 65-80 hours and 13% work over 80 hours.

Some solutions Sheri discussed were to be more realistic project scheduling and budgeting, support of the family unit, being knowledgeable about the industry beforehand, scheduling ownership, using overtime more efficiently and sparingly and improving management.
