IGDA Site Frustration - Please join on facebook

As many of you have seen in the past several days, managing changes to events via the IGDA website is a nontrivial challenge. What you didn't see was that each time I needed to make a change on the group home, I actually had to create a new event and cancel the old event since changing the date or time caused the SQL query to time out. As such, I'd like us to try and move to the facebook site, in the footsteps of the global organization. Please join the DC Metro chapter here:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=115048675174689

and the Global Boat here:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_156020591102977

You can also follow us on twitter:

Obviously the chapter page will remain, but I think it'll be easier to communicate with the group through more modern social media means.

UPDATED: Unity Game Development Tutorial Session

This Thursday, our own Andrew Eiche will be teaching a Unity 3 tutorial session at George Mason University in Vienna. Please join us if you’d like to learn how to design games in Unity 3, a 3D game engine capable of exporting to most platforms: stand-alone PC/Mac, web browsers, mobile devices, and game consoles.

If you’d like to participate, please bring a laptop with Unity 3 installed (it can be downloaded here: http://unity3d.com/unity/download/).

Feel free to forward this invite to other people who would be interested in learning how to use Unity, but since space is limited to about 45, please respond as soon as possible. Parking is less than $10 for 4 hours at GMU; please note the best place to park will be buildings 40 and 42 on this map: http://info.gmu.edu/FairfaxMap10lttr.pdf (we are meeting in building 22).

October Meeting!

Agenda:
7:00 pm – 7:30 pm Meet and Greet, Networking, Announcements
7:30 pm – 9:00 pm Learning Game Development Showcase

Bring your prototypes. Bring your “Almost Playables.” Come ready to play!

What are your Learning Objectives? What are the Player’s Objectives?

A player learns what she needs to in order to win, so we want the player’s objectives and the learning objectives to be closely aligned. Let’s figure that out before the game is fully designed.

Contact Melanie at or Seth at and we’ll get your prototypes running (or limping) on one of our computers. Make a short list of learning objectives, and we’ll all try our hand at your game.

Then we’ll discuss how well the objectives align and what tweaks to the game design could help. We will have an “almost playable” prototype of Immune Attack 2.0 for your critique and other games announced. If you are developing a Non-Learning Game, bring it, too.

Cases to get you thinking:

Tonight's Meeting Canceled

I'm sorry to have to do this, but I'm going to cancel our meeting tonight because I don't want people risking life and limb to get to GB which itself might even be closed.  Since the roads are already pretty bad and we anticipate getting up to another 9 inches, let's hold off on this meeting.  The venue has served us well for the past 5 months but given the growth of our chapter and its forays into other activities (like the Global Game Jam), we are reconsidering our meeting strategy.  Look for another meeting to occur at GMU later this month, the date of which will likely set the course for the coming months' meeting schedules.

Happenings of meeting on 12 Jan 2010

Our numbers are growing!

It was very nice to see how we are gaining momentum.  Our little guild gathering at Gordon Biersch turned into some very helpful networking as new and existing members shared some new thoughts and ideas for our chapter and what we might be working on for this year.

Global Game Jam

The Global Game Jam is coming up at the end of January and I wanted to gauge our chapter's interest in participating.  I spoke with Norb and Jerry a couple nights ago at the Games Gateway meetup, who are a couple members of the chapter from before the Big Collapse of 2007, and they mentioned some contacts from the local SIGGRAPH group who might be able to offer space for participating in the GGJ.  I took part in this last year at MIT and it was a lot of fun; is anyone else interested in participating?

Happenings of meeting on 8 Dec 2009

We had another good turnout at Gordon Biersch with some returning and new folks who were interested in our chapter.

Happenings of meeting on 10 Nov 2009

Greeting DC & Vicinity members,

Well, we had a pretty good turnout on Tues, 10 Nov 2009 when we met at Tyson's Corner for some beers and food at Gordon Biersch.  Thanks go to Trey Reyher for keeping the fire lit from the last meeting while we all caught up and also to Ross Dannenberg for help in "sponsoring" the event.  Many topics were discussed as we witnessed a traditional Redskins autograph signing during the evening.  Our next meeting is being scheduled for around 8 Dec 2009, but details are not set yet.

DC Chapter asked for help in upcoming non-profit conference

Hey DC Gamers,

Though I'm not the official president of the chapter or anything, my name seems to be on the admin label.  Oh well, the DC chapter has been asked to help provide speakers to an upcoming non-profit orgranization who is sponsoring a conference to our area youth discussing gaming careers.  The organization is Patriots Technology Training Center and they have a gaming day on Dec 12.  I know some of the recent gamers in the area had a social recently in Tyson's Corner, but I wanted to get the word out.

Regrouping of DC Metro area gamers

Greetings and welcome to the DC chapter!  We are in the process of regrouping, so please drop us a line and let us know what you would like to see happening here in the Metro area.
