On October 24, IGDA Detroit held an education roundtable discussion with four leaders of the gaming academic community in Michigan. The aim was to give attendees a better idea of the scope the various university programs related to gaming had, and how to better get into, and what they can get out of, said programs.

In attendance were Dr. Bruce Maxim from the University of Michigan, Prof. Brian Winn from Michigan State University, Kim Callery from the International Academy of Art & Design Detroit, and Jake Pollak from Schoolcraft College.

Each instructor gave an overview of their programs and how they'd developed, and a roadmap of where they are headed in the future.

After the break, we were joined by Ben Ridgeway, an instructor at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, whose students have been collaborating with Dr. Maxim's students on their game projects. It turns out that CCS students have been providing U-M students with art assets for their projects. We hope that this collaboration will expand in the future, for a greater cooperation between our state's educational institutions!

Takeaways from the evening were notes from the professors's findings in their programs, in that a graduate of Michigan game development programs find a job in the industry 99% of the time, provided they are willing to leave the state to do so. Michigan professors are very much looking to see new game companies in Michigan, to provide their students with more resources for internships and learning opportunities. Also, the serious games aspect of the industry is growing, with our educational bodies working to highlight that as a growing and positive application of their curriculums.

For the full notes of the roundtable, see Rich Elswick's moderator notes on the Discussion forums here.

This week! Wednesday from 6-9 pm we are having our Monthly meeting. It will be an
Education Roundtable with many wonderful discussions going on. We all hope you can make
it out for the evening. Some great door prizes are also to be had by our sponsors
Stardock, Wiley Publishing (books) and Apress, as if the awesome conversation to be
discussed isn't enough.

Unfortunately Dr. Laird cannot make it out, but Jacob Pollak will graciously take his
place. Jacob has been an Adjunct Professor teaching Multimedia design at Schoolcraft
College for several years now.

One change of note, the room we will be in is the 1011 IAVS (Borg Warner) auditorium (the
IAVS building is located in between the
Engineering Lab Bailing and the Mardigian Library - about 100 feet South
East of the CIS building). Here is a map of the campus:

Enjoy!

Gaming Expert Greg Trefry Discusses 'From Indie Games To Big Games'
Sunday October 7, 2007: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm -- Pittsfield Branch

Greg Trefry is project manager and game designer for the Manhattan-based GameLab, where he has worked on developing such popular games as Egg vs. Chicken, Lego Fever and Out of Your Mind. He will discuss his experiences as a game designer and Big Games, in which players move around cities competing in ways that overlay with day-to-day urban life, such as his Payphone Warriors Game, in which teams try to seize control of Manhattan's forgotten payphones. Those at this event will have ample opportunities for questions - and get a chance to try some of GameLab's best titles!

Link to site page information: http://www.aadl.org/events/list?id=12029

Greg Trefry has worked on many popular indie games and is one of the founders of the Come Out & Play Festival, which brought highly creative, engrossing city-wide games to the streets of NYC (2006) and Amsterdam (2007). After studying English and fiction writing at Northwestern University, Greg moved into interaction and data design. While working at a financial information company and one day staring at a database diagram too long, he became obsessed with the ways information, systems and patterns create narrative and help people understand the world around them. From this psychosis, games were an obvious next step. Greg earned a Masters degree at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program where he focused a lot on games. The idea of rule sets grabbed hold of his brain and refused to let go, leading him to design experiments with everything from board games to large-scale urban games, like Payphone Warriors. He has spoken at conferences about location-based games and taught workshops on game design. He is currently obsessed with modern office folk games.

IADT College is putting on a one-day conference on July 28th. See
detailed information below.

We will have an IGDA meeting at their school, which is at 15 mile
and I-75, from 6-8 PM after the conference is over for the day! There are 4 out of town speakers coming in for the conference so it will be WELL worth the price of admission, plus it is close!

Our meeting will be covering XBox Live and submitting games for it
presented by Cris Boyer! (Will Burton may participate some as well)
I have posted the flyer for the conference to the Yahoo Group's
page. Please feel free to distribute and/or print it at will. If you are interested in Exhibiting at the conference, please contact
Kim Callery at her information shown below.

Sorry, no discount for us IGDA members this year due to some logistics, but perhaps if it
goes well maybe next year.

Address for the conference is:
Troy Community Center
3179 Livernois
Troy MI 48083

Address for the chapter meeting is:

Today, Cryptic Studios, creators of City of Heroes/Villains and the upcoming Marvel MMOG have released CrypticAR, their animation rig program, to the public under the GNU.

This is not a trial or crippled version, this is the full tool they use in-house to create their own games.

It's a great opportunity for aspiring artists to try their hand at a professional art tool being used in the trenches right now to make games, and I bet some independent groups will pick up and use this tool as well, if and when they find it worth their while.

So send Cryptic some thanks, and grab a copy of CrypticAR at www.crypticar.com today!
