Monday - March 5th

(Work-in-progress. Final schedule subject to change.)

10:00 AM

Keynote

Doug Church - Electronic Arts Los Angeles

Doug Church, a long time industry developer and participant in Industry/Academy communications, will discuss some hopes and fears about the collaboration. In the last 5 years the entire tone of the "games in education" discussion has changed, mostly for the better. And while we certainly haven't solved all industry/academy communication issues, we have made real progress. The bulk of the talk will consider what things might look like in 5 more years, what opportunities (and obstacles) are still in front of us, and hopefully inspire some aggressive thinking about the future.
11:15 AM

Design Workshop

Nick Fortugno - gameLab

The idea of using games in education continues to gain steam, but that hasn't made the process of making educational games any easier. Designing games for educational purposes is a process that requires new thoughts on both education and game creation. This session takes the design perspective. What does it mean to make a game? How do you make that _fun_? Participants engage in a hands-on non-digital design exercise to explore the specific challenges of game creation.
12:30 PM

Working Lunch Roundtables

Magy Seif El-Nasr - Penn State

In working lunch I, participants will divide into groups to discuss and revise the current framework. Groups will be divided to cover subject areas of the curriculum (e.g., design, programming, theory). The goal is to recommend revisions to the 2003 Curriculum Framework looking for problems: holes, insufficient detail, ambiguity and repetition. Each group will report findings via the IGDA blog.
2:00 PM

Teaching Methods

Tracy Fullerton - USC

This session will discuss a variety of teaching methods in relation to game design and development. The introduction will look at goals, strategies and several case studies.

Milan Petrovich will then organize attendees to break out into groups to brainstorm on specific topics which might include:
Managing the scope of student game projects
Building interdisciplinary student teams
Assigning games as "texts" for game studies courses
Issues in building & maintaining game libraries
Models for inter-institutional collaboration
Balancing theory and practice
Competitions and festivals as learning objectives
The goal of each break out group will be to come up with shareable teaching strategies for their topic.

Darren Torpey, Beth Aileen Dillon
Groups will report back ideas from their brainstorms at the end of the session.
4:15 PM
