Volunteer Teams
So, I thought I'd start a thread about volunteer teams. Are the effective? Do volunteer teams often complete their projects? Why or why not? What does it take to motivate a team of volunteers? What will kill or demotivate a team of volunteers?
I currently have a team of 10 volunteers working on our game. This seems rather large, yet everyone has their on niche so far. The breakdown is:
- 1 Studio Director (me)
- 3 programmers
- 3 artists (2 3D and 1 2D)
- 1 designer
- 1 associate producer
- 1 intern designer
I was able to offer some perks for being on the team:
- Access to free, legitimate software
- Use of the project as a reference for future employment (and networking via LinkedIn), etc.
- Use of any assets in their own portfolio
This project is scheduled to take 4 to 6 months, so the fun part will be to keep everyone excited and motivated during that time!
So, any others out there working with volunteer teams? Any thoughts or advice?
