============================
Dear IGDA Friends and Members,
I am pleased to announce the IGDA's involvement and support of the Game
Developers Choice Awards to be held at this year's Game Developers
Conference. The Game Developers Choice awards are designed to give the
development community a true voice in recognizing outstanding contributions
to the art form. All members of the IGDA and active game developers will be
able to both nominate and vote on the winners of these awards. Please take
a moment below to learn more about the awards program and be sure to
nominate your favorites!
Also, all members of the IGDA will soon be receiving a special letter and
ballot in the mail. We've had a tremendous year of growth and we are
looking to continue that growth and provide more benefits to our
membership. The board has approved and needs the final ratification by our
members for some changes to our voting process. The first change is that we
will now use the annual meeting at the GDC as a chance for potential board
members to present their views and give members a chance to meet with them
directly. Voting would then occur after the meeting. We're also extending
all the board terms from two to three years and we're looking to be able to
automate the voting process for the future by ratifying an online voting
process. Please take a moment to read the news below and be sure to vote
yes on the ballot! To make all of these changes final, we do need your
response, so please do take a minute to mark yes on the ballot and return
it to us as soon as you get it.
Finally, this month's newsletter is full of continued new activities and
updates for the association. Be sure to check out the area that interests
you the most. Happy New Year to all of you!
Alex Jarett
Chairman, IGDA

1.1 The Game Developers Choice Awards
-------------------------------------
Nominations for the Game Developers Choice Awards are now in progress!
Be recognized as the true superstars that you are! The Game Developers
Choice Awards are developer driven, and allow developers to recognize and
reward each other. This is all about celebrating the art form of games, and
the effort and sacrifices that go into making these awesome bits of
interactivity.
Reward the people and products that have been nominated by their peers, and
voted on by their peers. No corporate fuss, no sales figures, just the
choice of the developer community. This is the place where the faces
behind the magic step into the spotlight...
All active game developers and IGDA members are eligible to make
nominations. Jump online to start naming names:
http://www.igda.org/awards/
1.2 ALERT! Dimpled chads
------------------------
Not to be confused with all the hoopla for the award nominations above, the
IGDA is in the process of making some constitutional changes to help
improve the organization. In summary, the changes are to:
- increase board member terms to three years (instead of current two year term)
- allow the Board of Directors to set the time of the annual election
(which plans to be set for post GDC timeframe, as opposed to the end of the
calendar year)
- permit electronic ballots in future votes
This "alert" is simply an FYI that all IGDA members will be receiving a
ballot in the mail towards the end of the month in order to vote on the
above items. No worries, a full description of the changes and all
supporting info will be provided.
It is critical that we get the maximum response rate from our membership,
and we kindly ask that all members take the time to vote and drop the
pre-paid ballot envelope in the mail.

1.4 Chapters spreading like wildfire
------------------------------------
It would seem as though a popular developer resolution for the new year is
to drink more beer... Well, to be more precise, it would be to get together
with other developers to drink more beer :) Many Chapters, with the goal of
bringing together local developer communities in a social setting, have
been popping up all over the map. Many of these Chapters will be having
their inaugural gatherings at the end of January. Several of the new
Chapters include Montreal, Amsterdam, Denmark, Houston and Columbus, Ohio.
If you are a developer living in these areas, be sure to stop by for some fun.
A full Chapter listing can be found below, or at the IGDA site:

2.1 Game Technology Seminars

January 30 - February 2
San Francisco, California
http://www.techsem.com/
The Game Technology Seminars are full, intensively paced days of non-stop
learning. The Physics track (January 30 & 31) will cover continuum dynamics
- or, simulating flowing, squishy, misty, windy, bouncy, stretchy,
breakable, decidedly-non-rigid stuff. The Graphics track (February 1 &2)
will cover geometry and the mathematics of geometry processing - or, the
days of drawing predefined static meshes are over. All IGDA members are
eligible for a $50 discount when registering.
2.2 Interactive TV & Mobile Games
---------------------------------
February 19-21
One Whitehall Place, London
http://www.access-conf.com/TV110/
The second annual Interactive TV Games conference follows last year's
highly successful industry event. Interactive TV games are the future of
fun. New innovations have stoked the flames of the mass market. Now
developers and top-level innovators are preparing to reach a whole new
playing field. All IGDA members are eligible for a 20% discount when
registering.
2.3 Mobile Games Convention
---------------------------
March 12-13
London, England
http://www.euroforum.co.uk/mgames/igda
The First International Mobile Games Convention guarantees two days of
in-depth presentations affording authoritative, expert advice. Whether you
are a mobile operator, games developer, publisher, portal player or venture
capitalist, Mobile Games provides the perfect forum for you to meet
with your peers and debate, understand and discuss developments and
determine how to realize fully the potential of the mobile games market.
All IGDA members are entitled to a 15% discount off conference fees.
2.4 Prep for GDC 2001
---------------------
As always, the annual Game Developer Conference is a prime event for the
community to connect. This year's GDC will be no exception. As such, the
IGDA crew is hard at work preparing for a great show. We welcome all input,
feedback and ideas from the community as to what you'd like to see the
IGDA do, or present, at the show. Please, nothing too crazy...
