Dear Members and friends,

What better way to begin the new year than to contemplate the greatness of
games!

Grab your favorite game and invite some gamer newbie friends over to your house
for an evening. Watch their eyes light up as they master a key combo and kick
your behind. Or, why not head over to your local mom&pop game shop and listen
to the kids' enthusiasm. They're choosing a brave new world to immerse themselves
in, and they are beyond excited. Or, troll a fan forum and contemplate the reality
of gamers - your customers - debating your game design decisions to the nth degree.

Or, best of all - give your own kudos to the teams that made 2003's best games
by nominating them for a Game Developers Choice Award:

http://www.igda.org/awards/nominations.htm

The Choice Awards are the only by-developer for-developer awards in the industry
- only those involved in the development and design of games are eligible to
submit nominations. Pure developer opinion - no hype, no fees, no politics. If
other game awards annoy you with their disingenuous'ness - you owe it to yourself
to participate.

Enjoy your contemplations and happy gaming!

Director of Product Operations, Eidos

Quality of Life Survey
----------------------
A few moments of your time will provide essential data on the current state
of game developer quality of life. The IGDA's Quality of Life Committee
will use this data to improve the game development experience
industry-wide. If you are involved in game development, please take the survey:

http://www.igda.org/qol/

Our industry is notorious for the toll it takes on people: long hours, high
levels of stress, difficulty to conciliate career and family life. As a
result, many game developers leave the business within a few years, the
industry as a whole suffers from the loss of experience and productivity,
and must pay for repeated hiring and training.

The Committee will study the issues and will propose practical solutions in
a Quality of Life White Paper to be presented at GDC. Jump online for more
info:

http://www.igda.org/qol/

Choice Awards nominations: January 23rd deadline
------------------------------------------------
Nominations are open for the 4th annual Game Developers Choice Awards and
will run until Friday, January 23rd. The Choice Awards recognize games and
developers chosen by those who know games best - their creators. Don't miss
the opportunity to honor your fellow developers.

For further information and to nominate, go to:
http://www.igda.org/awards/nominations.htm

Event Report: China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference
-----------------------------------------------------------
The IGDA was on hand for the first major game industry event in mainland
China. The China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference, or "ChinaJoy,"
was a mix of E3-style game expo along with business and developer
conference tracks. Check out the summary report and pictures of the trip to
China:

Game Accessibility Survey
-------------------------
The IGDA's Game Accessibility SIG is conducting on online survey to
inform work on a whitepaper that will guide development and design
of accessible games for people with disabilities (including hearing impaired,
low vision, and dyslexia).

Developers already working in this area of game development are encouraged
to please fill in the web form before February 16th. To qualify you must
have produced at least one title available for download and/or purchase
that includes accessibility features for at least one disability group.

The survey and further details are online:

Game industry growth is radically accelerating and ever-changing market
conditions demand evolution. As risks increase, developers must adopt new
methodologies and pipelines, as well as anticipate and meet skyrocketing consumer

expectation. To continue to engage audiences, developers must reinvigorate
existing genres and properties, and create compelling new ones.

Evolve.
