0: A Word From Kathy Schoback
=============================
Dear Members and friends,
Among the news items below, you'll see a number of "calls": for
contributions to white papers, volunteers to work on committees,
submissions to resource lists, and the like.
Many of us see our work in this industry as a "calling", not a job. Our
friends would look at us funny if we said a higher power "called" us to
make videogames, but there's no question many of us have given up
higher-paying or more prestigious careers for the privilege of creating fun.
In that context, it's worth bringing up a recent discussion among the board
of directors about the positioning of the IGDA. Jesse Schell observed that
membership appears to be divided among people who see the IGDA as an
exclusive club, with benefits as a return on their membership fee ("What
discounts can I get? Where can I score my next job?"), and others who view
it as a charity with intangible personal benefits ("I want to help improve
the lot of game developers in general."). In other words, a calling.
As the board works through the implications of these two viewpoints, I
encourage you to consider what kind of member you are (or would be), and
what kind of organization you want the IGDA to be. Although the board sets
direction based on indirect representation of the membership, the engine
that moves the IGDA is committee and volunteer work. No good idea goes
unheard or discouraged, but a lot of good ideas get put on the back burner
for lack of a person to step forward and take ownership. The next time you
think "The IGDA should really...", consider whether you feel strongly
enough about the topic to take on leadership yourself. Chances are, you
won't have to execute the whole initiative yourself. Sometimes it just
takes a starter...
Discussion always welcome:

Quality of Life White Paper - Call for Contributors
---------------------------------------------------
The IGDA has formed a Quality of Life Committee, whose mission is to make
the game development experience smoother and more pleasant for everyone,
therefore extending developers' careers and helping companies make better
games in easier fashion.
The Committee's core project for the coming year will be the preparation of
a Quality of Life White Paper, to be presented at GDC 2004, which will
document the impact of quality of life issues on employee turnover and on
loss of qualified personnel to other industries, and "best practices" to
improve quality of life in studios.
The Committee is looking for volunteers to contribute to this effort. If
you or your company has successfully tackled quality of life issues
resulting from work organization, contractual problems, work hours,
employee morale, or any other issue of general interest to the game
development community, please review the call for volunteers, and join our
effort!

Funding & Assistance Resource List - Call for Submissions
---------------------------------------------------------
The IGDA Business Committee is putting together a resource listing for
developers in search of funding and assistance. The list will detail
funding and assistance options ranging from government tax incentives to
grants and loans. If you have information about funding or other assistance
programs, we want your help! Please review the call for submissions for
more information and details on submitting a resource to the list.

Online Games Committee - Call for Contributors
----------------------------------------------
The Online Games Committee, now in its third year, is starting work on
three new white papers, to be delivered at GDC 2004 and published on the
IGDA web site. The Committee is looking for contributors who wish to share
their experience in the areas covered by the white papers: Web/downloadable
games; Mobile games; Persistent world games.
Contributors with a variety of experience are needed, including business,
marketing, production, technology, and international (esp. Europe and Asia)
viewpoints. The purpose of the white papers is to make valuable insight and
market research available to developers that cannot afford expensive
analyst reports, or who wish to augment their analyst research with "grass
roots" data. Please see the Committee's web page for more information.

feedback-forum at SourceForge. The Committee's next milestone is GDC 2004,
where they hope to present a first draft on game AI interface standards.
