0: A Word From Jen MacLean
==========================
Dear Members and friends,
Last week, the IGDA announced a partnership with the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) to work together on the Interactive Achievement Awards. The IGDA's mission is to improve the careers and enhance the lives of game developers, and recognition for outstanding professional accomplishments is an important part in achieving those goals. We're very excited about giving our members the chance to vote in the Interactive Achievement Awards, and I urge you to take advantage of the opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments of your peers. Additional information about the IGDA/AIAS partnership can be found in our FAQ:
http://www.igda.org/awards/aias_faq.php
For U.S. members, your vote is even more important on Election Day, November 4. Many states and localities are considering game-related legislation, and the federal government will be looking closely at copyrights, internet regulation, and the impact of video game violence over the next four years. All of these issues directly impact your potential for creative expression and commercial success; please educate yourself on the positions of your local, state, and national candidates, and be sure to cast your vote on November 4.
Best regards.
- Jen MacLean
Chairperson, IGDA
VP Business Development, 38 Studios

3: Global Game Jam
==================
Get ready for the Global Game Jam, a simultaneous event happening within the same 48 hours around the world. GGJ is the weekend of January 30 February 1, 2009, so catch up on your sleep and mark your calendars that you are going to be at a local jam.
The IGDA's Education SIG have managed to come up with over 25 different host sites throughout the world: Atlanta Paris Cape Town NYC Sydney Orlando Rio de Janeiro - LA Copenhagen Vancouver to name a few. We are currently looking for additional hosting sites. Check out the website for more information. Sign-up starts late October.
http://www.globalgamejam.org/
We have asked some of the world's greatest developers to help us create the constraints and mechanics of the GGJ... Blow, Brathwaite, Church, Hecker, Lai, Schrieber, Sicart and Zimmerman. We will change one of the game constraints in each time zone, mixing things up for everyone.
The Education SIG has developed this initiative and is meant as an opportunity to promote the mission of the IGDA, improving developer's careers through community, professional development and advocacy. Further, the SIG's mission also adds... to enhance the education of future and current game developers.
