Developing for the PlayStation3

Speaker: George Bain, Developer Support Manager, SCEE Technology Group
Sponsor: mary-margaret.com

This event which turned out to be the chapter's largest, second only to the party held last September, had an attendance of been eighty to ninety, including the sponsors for the event (mary-margaret.com, developers and some media), was an eye opener in terms of what was revealed for the development options and potential for the forthcoming PlayStation3 (PS3).

After everyone fetched their beer and settled down for the presentation, George Bain introduced himself and immediately went into the nooks and crannies of the hardware architecture of the PS3 and what this means to both the development community and the future users. When the discussion got onto the topic of programming for the console, George was speaking from a personal perspective with his own experiences of working with the console. After going through the architecture and development potential, George described the actual performance of the console: graphics, sound, connectivity, etc. It was made clear that some of what was being described was not finalised and some decisions were still work in progress. Overall, George was generous with the content of the presentation, taking questions afterwards and surprising those who asked questions that diverged from the norm a bag of prizes ? one male, one female.

After the presentation was over there were more free beers for everyone and several hours of socialising. Some of the hardcore remained until closing time.
