IGDA Meet April 9th - Report

We started around 8.15pm, with total attendance of 20+ people. We go for a round of self-introduction, where there's a bunch of Limkokwing students, MMU students and a guy working in IT industry; looking forward to venture in game industry.

The session was very informal, as usual with most of our chapter's meeting. We started with a sharing session by Hilmy and me, where we showed our resume and portfolio. Pointing out what we did right and what we did wrong, and why we do it in a certain way. There was few questions been thrown by the audience that addresses a typical dilemma faced by them in preparing their resume and portfolio.

The second part of the session, where I covered some of the quick information that I grab online regarding portfolio and resume samples from the game industry. I've categorized it to 3 main professions; artist, programmer, and game designer. I've also quickly label them based on my own interpretation of what their specific skillsets are; so, please be aware there are some mistakes of the labeling. Hereby, I've uploaded the text file that I shared that day.

Lastly, there are few Q&As regarding GameINC, where I've answered them individually. There are around 5 of them who are planning to apply for it. Please be reminded to submit your application by 16th of April. All the best.

Overall, the session achieved it's objective. Although, as Hilmy pointed out to me, it was pretty much one sided on the second part of the session. It would have been better, if everyone who attended brings their own portfolio and showcase it to everyone else. With that note in mind, I'm planning for another session somewhere in June/July where it is a showcase session by students and fresh graduates and the audience would be local game companies, looking out to hire new talents.

Last but not least, thanks for coming and I'm sorry because the session took longer than what I've planned it to be. Hopefully, everyone has learned something from it.
