L'entretien demeurera strictement confidentiel.

The best local video game companies

Every year the local weekly paper does an exhaustive best-of list. This year, for the first time ever, they included the Best Local Video Game Company:

1. Ubisoft Montreal
2. EA Montreal
3. A2M
4. Gameloft
5. Kokoromi

The last one, of course, isn't a company, but it's great to see that locals are recognizing the indie gaming scene here as well as all the major companies!

Working Conditions Research - Interview Participants Needed

Here's an announcement/request regarding important research from UQAM:

If you work in the video game industry and you want to talk about the work conditions in the industry, here is your chance. We are a group of UQAM sociologists conducting research on the working conditions and exercise of citizenship at work in the video game industry.

We are recruiting men and women who hold creative jobs in the industry and are willing to do a recorded one-hour interview.

You will receive $30 for your time. It will take place ideally at our offices (100 Sherbrooke St W, at St-Urbain, just behind Place-des-Arts). Our questions focus mainly on how you balance your work with your family and personal life, what your plans are for aging in the industry, what is a typical work day for you, the reasons that made you choose this field of work, how you make decisions in your work and how you manage risks (for example aging, sickness, parenting, unemployment, retirement, etc).

The interview will remain strictly confidential. We will not disclose names, companies or any intimate information. Neither are we interested in video game specifics; particularly, we won't ask you about game projects you're developing. We will really be focusing on your work conditions.

Our goal is to better understand contemporary transformation in the work force especially amongst non-unionized highly qualified workers. The research is funded by The Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and conducted by Marie Josée Legault.

If you are interested in participating, please contact our research agents to schedule an interview by June 23rd:

  • Alexandra Guité / guite.alexandra@teluq.uqam.ca / 514-843-2015 x2983

Jalloo Festival of Animation and Games in Miramichi

The Jalloo Festival of Animation and Games in New Brunswick is inviting the gaming industry to check out the work being showcased by the NBCC students.

The event is free of charge and takes place in Miramichi, New Brunswick on June 11 and 12.

Follow the link for additional information...

The Jalloo Festival of Animation and Games serves as a promotional event and a networking opportunity. New Brunswick’s GSA (Gaming, Simulation, and Animation) initiative needs a showcase event where current and potential Atlantic companies and their partners in this industry can show off their current abilities. NBCC Miramichi has mature programs that have been training for these industries for over a decade, and this event allows them to promote their programs to potential students and to combine their graduating students with potential employers. Speakers from all over the world will lend their expertise to panels and workshops as well as participate in events designed to allow perfect business networking opportunities. In short, Jalloo provides a chance to show and grow the GSA industries in the region, the province, and the Atlantic Provinces as a whole.

The name Jalloo reflects the Celtic roots of NB and comes from the Gaelic word “jalloo” which means art, drawing, simulation (specifically it comes from Manx, the Gaelic spoken on the Isle of Mann). This word makes a perfect description for the content and intent of the festival.

Please refer to the Jalloo website for updated details on dates, events, and guest speakers.

U.K. investigating Canadian gaming tax credits

The Vancouver Sun goes a bit sensational, saying that the U.K. is starting a trade war with Canada over the tax credits being offered to gaming companies, luring away them away from the U.K. The formal investigation will see if it is "compatible" with the WTO principles. Most gaming sites say it's pretty easy to understand why companies would make the jump. One U.K. blogger calls us Pesky Canadians and says it's about time someone investigated these incentives.

Upcoming design lecture at the Université de Montréal

If the lack of recent IGDA meetings has left you yearning for some learning, a local lecture might be able to help you fill that void...

The École de design industriel is hosting a session called "Sketching user experiences: Getting the design right and the right design". The speaker will be Bill Buxton, a principal researcher at Microsoft and associate professor at the University of Toronto.

When: Tuesday, March 25th at 6pm
Where: Amphithéâtre Hydro-Québec, Pavillon de la Faculté de l'aménagement, Université de Québec, 2940 Côte-Sainte-Catherine Road

From the flyer (after the break):

Designing for the class of objects such as mobile phones or personal digital assistants, whose character, design and experience is as much a matter of software as hardware, poses a real challenge. How does one design the holistic experience? How does this relate to industrial design?

Bill Buxton is a designer and researcher obsessed with human aspects of technology. He is particularly interested in technologies supporting creative activities such as design, film making and music. His research focuses on technologies, techniques and theories of input to computers, mediated human-human collaboration, and ubiquitous computing.

Now principal researcher at Microsoft and associate professor at the University of Toronto, Bill Buxton has been a regular consulting research scientist at Xerxc Parc and chief scientist at Alias/Wavefront and SGI. Through his career he has professed and put into action the belief that designs ignoring the social and cultural experiences that the engender are not worthy of that name.

Over two million dollars in donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children's hospitals across North America and the world have been collected since the charity's inception.

Supporting Anna's Walk To Fight Breast Cancer

A note from Anna Sjöström of Babel Media:

I'll be participating in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer this August.

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and has received extraordinary treatment back home in London, leading to a full recovery. However, most of us know people who are not so lucky.

To help allow for more research, I'll walk 60km over the course of one weekend. Proceeds benefit Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital, and a McGill University teaching hospital.

As a condition of participation, I must raise at least $2,000. So, yes, this is a plea for your financial support. If you or your company would like to support me with a fully tax-deductible contribution, you can sponsor online or download a sponsorship form on my website: www.endcancer.ca/goto/annasjostrom

I'll be at the next IGDA Chapter meeting on June 12th to talk more about this important event. Thank you in advance for any support!

Our friends from LucasArts have sent word that they are participating in digital art production conference Adapt:

"We're participating in the ADAPT conference in Montreal the weekend of Sept 23-24. Chris Williams, Project Lead on LucasArts' Indiana Jones project will be doing a 90 minute presentation. Additionally, one of the Compositing Supervisors from Industrial Light & Magic, Eddie Pasquarello, will be doing a presentation on Pirates of the Caribbean."

Check out the snazzy Adapt website for more details. FYI, it was also announced that Chris Williams would be giving the keynote speech at GDC London...

Autodesk Launches The Area

Autodesk has recently launched it's community portal for digital artists called The Area. Their opening blurb notes:

"Think of it as a 3D resource made by you, for you. An area for artists and developers, beginners to advanced – to create, collaborate and communicate."

They've got blogs, forums, portfolios, polls and cool tools to download. Everything a digital artist could ask for :)
