IGDA ANNOUNCES GDC STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Up to 25 Scholarships Will Be Awarded to Promising Students in Game Development
SAN FRANCISCO - November 21, 2000 - The International Game Developers Association (IGDA), an independent non-profit professional organization for developers of entertainment software, today announced their Game Developers Conference (GDC) Student Scholarship Program for the upcoming 2001 GDC. The program is spearheaded by the IGDA's Education Committee and will provide up to 25 qualified college students with a chance to attend the 2001 GDC free of charge, allowing access to key conference seminars, panel discussions and potential job opportunities with exhibiting companies.
"One of the Education Committee's goals has always been to provide developers with better trained and better qualified entry-level staff," said Warren Spector, executive producer at ION Storm, and co-chair of the IGDA's Education Committee. "Awarding these scholarships gets us closer to that goal by providing access to GDC and imparting that extra edge academically and professionally and to see what it takes to succeed in game development."
Students can apply online (http://www.igda.org/Outreach/Students-Newbies/students-newbies_scholarships.htm) and must answer various essay-style questions. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2001, and winners will be announced by January 31, 2001. Applications will be reviewed by various IGDA board members - which include Elaine Hodgson of Incredible Technologies, Julian Eggebrecht of Factor 5, Matt Toschlog of Outrage Entertainment and Warren Spector of ION Storm. The entries will be judged for overall quality and relevance to game development, as well as aspirations and career goals.
"It is terrific to see the IGDA and its Education Committee offer this opportunity to students," said Jessica Hodgins, associate professor, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University and IGDA Education Committee member. "For many of these students, attending the GDC would be impossible without this scholarship, and the invaluable education and the connections that they make at the conference will have a lasting impact on their future careers."
