Welcome everyone! Intros...
Hi everyone! I guess the first topic is... introduce yourselves and let us start to link forum IDs to real people!
This is Matthew Ford. I'm the coordinator for the Greater Brisbane chapter we are starting.
The Greater Brisbane chapter welcomes game developers from Brisbane, Australia, as well as the surrounds including the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
and more greetings ...
i go under the name truna. i am an immersion and game design educator here in brisbane.
i am involved in the independent and art culture side of game design and feel that a strong industry presence complete with vibrant events will benefit us all!

Hi Guys,
This is Mick Gordon here and I am the guy who had the Taxi saga with the first meeting.
I am in the audio industry coming from a film scoring background and only dipping my notes into the games industry for about two years (even though I was a keen gamer WAY before films).
This chapter is going to be fantastic for creating a friendly community among Greater Brisbane game developers.
Mick
Hi all,
I'm Peter Jarrett, MD of an indie start-up (Gridwerx) and probably one of the most junior-burgers of the crew from a commercial gaming experience point of view (but learning fast).
I've come from a mixed background - disc jockey, PR consultant, management consultant/finance guy, IT operations & project manager for commercial software/web development and now making my initial forays into the gaming sphere with my colleagues.
I made it to AGDC last year, the Indie Festival in Melbourne this year, and am part of the IIB Games Cluster.
I'm looking forward to getting involved and ask for your patience with the newer entrants to the gaming community such as myself...
Cheers
PJ
Hi,
Paul Cohen here. Coming at gamedev from the startup/R&D side of things.
Have been involved in the qld games cluster and Indie freeplay festival. Hopefully we can really get a viable indy scene off the ground.

Congratulations on getting an IGDA chapter happening in Brisbane! If there's any way Sumea can be of service to you, let me know
Oh, hello. I guess I should have read this thread first, eh?
I'm Travis, the running guy of the QUT Gaming Faction. http://www.games.ci.qut.edu.au
Also an ex-student of Truna!
Hi, this is Simon Stevenson, programmer at Pandemic Studios.
Hello,
Anthony Connell from Clear Market Access here. I run my own localisation/ marketing business, specialising in the Japanese market, but my background is in Finance.
I enjoy games but I really get excited over a hot new gaming business model. I also enjoy wearing suits (and do some lecturing at ACU and tutoring at QUT in international business.)
Pleasure to make your acquaintance.
I didn't know Pandemic actually had a Brisbane studio! You learn something new every day, ja?
Yesterday I learnt that Big Brother: Up Late is not a reliable source of income.
Good to see all the intros, welcome everyone and keep it up!

Whoops, got a bit carried away and put this in the wrong section.
Here it is again.
Hi,
It's great news to see a chapter in Brisbane formed.
Just thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm Kyle, a student at UQ. I'm very interested in game development and am currently in the process of improving my skills, especially in 3D and Level design.
I'd really like to come along to a meet, but I'll wait until you start inviting students. Just make sure you let us know when you are!
Good luck,
Kyle Quinlan
Belated hello to all. I've been meaning to join and get involved with IGDA for a year or more but have been hampered by crunches and general life stuff. My name is Ken Williamson, formerly of Krome Studios, now of THQ Brisbane. I'm also one of the webmasters on local site BigKid (which has slowed down a lot since we all started working in the industry, but is still going, and which by the way is available for IGDA promotion).
Great to see the chapter start in Brisbane, and I'm making it a priority to get to the meetings from here on in.
hi ken ...
and welcome to the greater brisbane chapter of IGDA .. we have a website up and running so you can see how the past meetings have been ....
i've used bigkid a few times - very useful...!
i think there are rumours of another meeting to organise a chapter meeting happening ...
watch this space!

hi I'm Kieran, although for the last 6 years i've been known as "Kez".
Currently a QUT honors student researching a new triangle stripping technique for specializing to hardware/specific usage. Got some personal projects on the side, however these stalled once honors started due to time requirements.
Strictly speaking i'm a programmer (specializing in graphics), but my main other hobby is drawing. I'm no great artist, but i'm trying to make sure that when i do "programmer art" people don't spot it right away.
No real games industry experience yet, can't do much for another 6 months (till i get out of uni).
Another Pandemic Brisbanite here - Dan Teasdale, I'm a Senior Designer here.
Hello everyone,
My name is Chris, and I operate a business on the Sunshine Coast called Virtual Mechanix.
I haven't been to this forum for quite a while and was supprised to see a Brisbane chapter had been formed during my absence, great stuff
I'll look forward to join in at future meetings.
Cheers,
Chris
hi chris ...
and welcome .... we are about to put up news of our next meeting ...
but just in advance:
the brisbane chapter of the IGDA is holding a further outreach workshop and event as part of the straight out of brisbane festival ...
http://www.straightoutofbrisbane.com - see the games activities ....
this is a chance to both network with others from the local industry and to see what the next bunch of games-designeres-in-waiting are doing ... offer them support, advice and hopefully a cold beer!
Getting into Games - portfolio workshop and advice with the IGDA
Venue: Village Twin Cinema
Sat 11th Dec 6.30 - 8.00 pm
do try and join us, spread the word .... the last outreach session we held was a delight ....
love truna
ps ... hmm, shouldn't that be them offering us a cold beer?
Hey everyone!
My name's pospi, I've finally put in an effort and signed up with the IGDA after many months of meaning to do so. I'm a QUT student doing IT and comm design, am really looking forward to getting into the games industry.
Games has always been my hobby and I do a fair bit of programming in my own time as well as some modelling and 2D work when necessary. I try to slip a game-related project into my uni assignments whenever remotely applicable. Still havent really decided on any particular area of specialisation, but I've been thinking: If I enjoy doing this kind of thing so much in my own time, why not try and make it official?
I thought of coming to the IGDA outreach those weeks back, but then I remembered that I have never really completed many things. Should remedy that.
Anyway hope to get more involved and see you all around!
Hey Sam,
Good to see your wanting to get into the industry. I would really recommend coming along to the portfolio workshop this Saturday and bring along anything you have. There is gonna be a stack of industry people there so it will be a great opp for you to show off!
Getting into Games - portfolio workshop and advice with the IGDA
Venue: Village Twin Cinema
Sat 11th Dec 6.30 - 8.00 pm
Hosts: IGDA brisbane chapter: http://igda.org/brisbane
PS There is also this kick ass game audio workshop happening on Thursday:
Game Audio Workshop - playing with the fifth wall ..
Venue: Festival Club
Thurs 9th Dec 6.00 pm
Hope to see you there!
/me checks roster. Woohoo! I have Thursday off! I'll be there for your audio workshop, Mick. Not that I'm an audio guy, but my latest project is to be music-free, so ambience/soundscapes are something I'd like to R&D a bit.
Hi I'm Michael Dobele ( Mik )
Currently completing my Bachelor Degree at QANTM here in Brisbane, I am one of the coders on a project called Scootarama that recently won the 2004 AGDC best unsigned indi competition. Currently trying to bridge the gaps in my programming knowledge so I can actually do a bit better at the next companies entrance exam.
Look forward to becoming a regular from now on.
Hey Mik!
Congratulations again on winning your AGDC award! Im still having fun with the copy you gave - great work!
Please check the forums regulary regarding any upcomming IGDA events that you can get yourself to. Networking is the best thing in this industry and me thinks we're pretty good at it!
Anyway, good luck with your final year at QANTM and see you in the games industry!
