I've got some fantastic news on the accessible gaming front. RetroRemakes.com are hosting a single switch game programming competition. Programmers from far and wide have a month to create the best game/s they can that will be playable using a single switch. There are three prizes up for grabs, but a ton of kudos for all having a go. People's efforts will go to further the very small range of games playable with a single switch. Closing date will be 11:59pm on the 11th May UK Time.

Competition rules here: http://www.retroremakes.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4043

One of the earliest one switch competition entries can be played right now on-line!:

Spaced Out, by Cando Interactive

http://www.candointeractive.com/prototypes/spacedOut.htm

It's a scrolling space-age obstacle course, where you can move your space ship upwards using the SPACE BAR or just a left mouse click. Very addictive!

There are already nearly 20 downloadable single switch games ready to be played, borne of the RetroRemakes.com one switch game competition.

The quality is amazingly high, and the range of different ideas wide for getting around the constraints of using a single switch. Just goes to prove that you don't really need 2 analogue sticks, D-pad and 14 buttons to play a good game.

Worth While

I hope my game wins. But even if it doesn’t, I think this competition was well worth while. For the first time I was able to create a game that both my hardcore gamer friends and my grandmother (with her crippling arthritis) truly enjoy playing.

I didn’t have time to finish the other games I wanted to enter. Although I think my other designs are more creative; they didn’t mesh as well with my initial goal which was to enter a game that allows people with both fast and slow reflexes to enjoy playing it. I still plan on finishing and releasing the others though. (That is assuming I can ever get my grandmother to stop incessantly playing my game so I can work on my computer again…)
