based on my experiences (looking for a placement for final year university degree).. chances of work experience are slim to none.
however - try contacting a number of places.. i imagine you'd be needing to find somewhere relatively close to where you live (semi-easy in melbourne)..
a lot of places will cite lack of resources (which is true), or the secrecy of their current projects (which is also true).. some probably won't even reply at all.
best bet is to go to the next igda meeting, agdc, or try going in and speaking to somewheres hr rep. good luck with it all dude.
