Hi,

My friend started something similar in Austin and I was wondering if anybody was interested? Basically, once a week, during the afternoon, you gather in a wifi connected place (as if in a company) and you work.

He has that and a general indie gathering at night (monthly) since ppl pointed out that they have day jobs and can't make the wkly one.

So nobody wants to do this?

I would be down for a scheduled co-work week night. It's not like New York is hurting for wi-fi coffee shops and I'm always looking for an excuse to leave the office on time.

We could also stalk Dave Gilbert. Use Google Maps and Twitter to make a game of it, sort of like Hunt the Wumpus.

Ah, a pervasive game! And maybe a bit of an adventure game as we search the target's known hangouts.

I would love to learn how to make a rubberband gun. I own one - I just don't know where it is.

> USE CHICKEN WITH PULLEY IN THE MIDDLE ON DAVE

That does nothing except embarrass Dave.

Sande, as long as you have an opposable thumb at the end an outstretched arm, you will never be without a rubber band gun.

Is no one else interested in a mid-week meet-up?

I had a deluxe version made out of chopsticks and rubber bands. When you pulled the trigger, the rubber band would go shooting out.

I need to find a place to meet cuz Cosi's turns into a dine-in restaurant at night.

New York City is home to a number of wi-fi enabled parks.

I want something near Grand Central.

Hah. It wouldn't be hard to stalk me. Just canvas the area 5 blocks around my apartment. Smile

Anyway, yeah I'd be up for this. I'm not sure of wifi enabled cafes near grand central though. There's the mid-manhattan library on 40th st and 5th ave, but we wouldn't be able to talk to each other or drink coffee!

Ask and ye shall receive:

The park is near Grand Central, has wifi, does not care if we drink, talk, smoke, streak... well, the last one may be pushing it.

Rain is, of course, an issue, but we'll jump off that bridge when we get to it. Thoughts?

Wicked sweet! I'm up for this. I'm can work anywhere/anytime so I'm pretty flexible. I'll go where-ever the masses decide.

I will be in the area tomo so I will investigate..

Re: Park -- Bryant Park holds concerts and old movies at night, which would be nice to see, but could be distracting. Also, I'm concerned that it might get hot (or dark) if outside.

Library -- I was thinking about this. Maybe they have a closed study group room? Also would have to check hours. And liquids etc would have to be discreet.

So the "ideal" situation is still a 24-hr Free Wifi coho (coffeehouse)

There's a Metro Cafe w/i walking distance... Think that's a chain. Not sure about the Wifi.

Ning Network

I started a Ning network with a few other IGDAers recently with the same indie workgroup premise. Our initial goal is to shoot for one of the G4C related grants and utilize as much persistent remote collaboration tools as possible. Touch base with me for an invite. The more the merrier.

Oh, it's not necessary that everyone has to be working on the same project, but send us info anyway.

So I check Cafe Metro and it closes at 8 PM.

But I don't know if this is still going on or if it's comfy: (I'm thinking we will need outlets)

Free Wi-Fi Service Now Available At Grand Central
Area Near Terminal's Station Master's Office Becomes A Hot Spot For Up To 60 Users At Once
NEW YORK (CBS) ― Don't leave home without it, that being your laptop. And that is, if your train leaves from Grand Central Terminal.

The Station Masters Office, long an oasis with benches, restrooms and a floral mural, is now a hot spot for free wireless Internet access.

MTA Metro-North Railroad customers can now turn on their laptops and surf the net or check e-mail while waiting for a train. Metro-North riders whose laptops are Wi-Fi ready can also keep up with train updates and news from wcbstv.com.

"Metro-North is pleased to offer this amenity to our customers," said Metro-North President Peter A. Cannito. "In fact, we're confident that the Station Masters Office will become even more popular now that Wi-Fi service has been established."

One citizens' group is thrilled Grand Central is finally using technology to its advantage.

"The installation of WiFi internet access in the Station Master's office will be a great addition for Metro-North riders," said William Henderson, Executive Director of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA. "This new service will put reliable internet access in a convenient location. We are pleased that Metro-North has recognized the needs of its customers and is acting to meet them."

Laptop computers equipped with an 802.11 a, b or g capable wireless network card can access the Internet. The hot spot can accommodate up to 60 users at once. A simple click on the portal page gets users surfing the net with ease.

The Station Masters Office, which is the terminals waiting area for ticketed customers, is located near Track 36.

Well, I checked it out and it's OK, it's got outlets and the Wifi's good. But it's for ticketed passengers and no tables, so....

But! I had another idea that could exist in tandem or in place. How about those dinner salons like Manifesto was doing? Basically pick a theme (like say "narrative design") and a restaurant and voila!

The Austin Indie co-work group - I believe in the daytime, they meet at a coffeehouse weekly but for the monthly night event, they go to Dave & Busters.

So I still want to the dinner salons. But as the coworking groups, I guess Bryant Park will be the default for now and hope for no rain.

need votes for when!

Having just come to the staggering revelation that we actually have forums, I have to say this sounds exciting. I'd love to be a part of it. Provided, of course, that you don't mind a relative newcomer siphoning some of your creative energy...

In short, I'm all for it. How should we set up a schedule?

However, we can make a stalk Somebody Else game. Stalk Dave Gilbert was too easy.
