Angieyeo, pixel artist means dealing with 2d art that is very small, often down to 32X32 pixel(although recent increase of processing power pushed the size higher). Open any of your image editing software, open a new document, and put in 32 pixels for your height and width, and then draw a character in it, you'll understand.

I believe all the other question that you ask, is on Sherman's website. Have a look at it, it's great.

Angieyeo, thanks for your interest. ^_^ Pixel art is the dotted 2D graphics you see in older games or mobile games. Unlike other 2D computer graphics, you do not draw and paint in large strokes. Instead, you have to do a lot of zooming in and out to draw a dot at a time. Then, as you add more dots, you zoom out to view how the dots fit together to look nice. Think of it like coloring the squares on a graph paper to make a nice looking art piece when you view from farther away or cross-stiched patterns (you know those of cartoon characters) on a cloth. You will also need to know a bit of technical knowledge when doing pixel art as you are frequently limited by the number of pixels and colors you can use. You would also need to make certain pixel art as tilable tiles (think of them as lego bricks) so that you can join them to make a game map. You won't want to create every map detail but if you make your tiles properly, they can form virtually every item on your map. The key is optimization and efficiency.

Here are some tutorial links if you are confused:
http://www.petesqbsite.com/sections/tutorials/tuts/tsugumo/chapter8.htm
http://www.derekyu.com/?page_id=218

You can see a lot of good pixel art here:
http://probertson.livejournal.com/

It would be good if you can produce something that is like our art style:

Our office is located in SunwayMas Commercial Center, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. That's a 15-minutes walk from the Kelana Jaya LRT station.

You can e-mail us at "Info (at) Sherman3D (dot) com". I have purposely separated the e-mail address that way to avoid spam. I am sure you can make it out.

Awaiting your application. ^_^

Hey, Cykique! ^_^ Thanks for helping with the clarification and the compliment. Nice to hear from you again! How have you been doing?

I am happy to inform everyone that Angie is now part of our team and she is one to prove that as long as you have passion and natural talent, you can learn quickly and be very good at pixel art. That is why we don't hire just based on paper qualifications and experience. We are still looking for more pixel artists if anybody else is interested. Thanks! ^_^

Our art style is anime inspired cute, bright and colorful, and our staff members are predominantly female at the moment so female artists are encouraged to apply. ^_^

Haha, I mess around with pixel art but I'm predominantly a programmer. And that skill is probably gonna rust coz I'm moving into 3D programming. Sorry could not be of much help there. Smile Big

No problem, IGGABYTE. I used to do some 3D programming myself. My university project was a 3D BSP Engine which you can download here:

Wow, great! Was that done in one semester?

I wished I hadn't used up my electives slots for the web dev subjects. Then I would have gotten into game programming much earlier. Anyway, thanks! Looks like there's some info from the documentation I can look into.

Hi IGGABYTE,

You are welcome and yup, just one semester. Most of what I have learned about game development didn't come from formal studies though so don't worry about using up your elective slots. Try to learn as much as you can online. Try http://www.gameinstitute.com/ My old 3D programming mentor, Gary Simmons, is teaching there the last I heard. ^_^ Get into a number of free hobby projects. All the best! ^_^

Hi transcendance,

We only judge you based on your skill. However, at 17, I would really suggest that you continue to pursue your studies so that you have more time to really decide what you want to do in life. Game development is not all fun and games - it is hard work day in and day out. I am not trying to discourage you but I just feel that you need to experience more when you are 17 before you settle for your job of choice. Nevertheless, if you think this is what you really want to do, please do send me your resume and portfolio.

Oh! I noticed that you registered at Sherman3D.com. Please check your spam mail folder for the verification e-mail because my system states that your e-mail account is not verified. Thanks and I wish you all the best! ^_^

From hardest to easiest:

Programming
Computer Science, A DIGIPEN course(only from DIGIPEN!)

Art/FMVs
Advertising, Digital Animation, Multimedia, Architecture

Business
Obvious courses......

Game Design
Comm/Journalism, Anything but prolly start from Tester

For job availability, do art. Art:Programmer ratio is big and can be bigger as a company grows.
For the money, do business but then again, also don't do this industry.

transcendance, you can e-mail me at info at Sherman3D.com but I think you will get more recommendations if you post here. My company is partnered with Adcom Digital Hub: http://www.adcomdh.com/ if you want to get into game art. I won't suggest you go into game design only because it is hard for us to evaluate a good game designer - everybody says their design is the best and I even got one guy trying to sell me his design before. Nevertheless, it is the implementation that counts. Also note that a game that get good reviews for good design does not necessarily translate into high sales. It is much easier for us to evaluate a good marketing/sales person who can even get a badly designed game to sell well - just pay a commission on sales. Both parties are happy.
