Hi guys,

As some of you know, I'm in the US for three months on a "workation" - alternately working and having fun. One thing I've been doing is getting the word out about IGDA Manila, and attending different gaming events and conferences.

I'll be compiling all my experiences in this thread just in case people are curious what the game industry here is like. I've written detailed stories on my blog, with pics:

Can I just say that the Austin GDC was awesome? I got to hang out w/ the coolest people, including the writers of Saints Row, Call of Juarez, Prince of Persia, Harry Potter, etc, the lead artist of Bungie, people from Obsidian and Big Huge Games, etc. Yesterday I hung out with someone who turned out to be the localization writer for Disgaea and Persona 4. Good times.

A lot of them were surprised that someone from Manila was in Austin GDC at all, and they asked a lot of questions on our game industry and our IGDA chapter.

I'll be going to IGDA Silicon Valley and IGDA Orange County meetings next, and then to the IGDA Leadership Forum in November. Will keep you guys posted, if anyone's interested :P

Hi guys,

I went to the IGDA Silicon Valley Game Demo Night last Sept. 30.

Game Demo Night

Spoke w/ their chapter coordinator, and she said that they started the chapter around three years ago, with a membership of... seven. That actually sounds like how the new IGDA Manila sounded, right? Smile She said not to give up, and just keep meeting regularly even if it's just for pizza and beer or something. The core group of IGDA Silicon Valley is still around, even three years later.

Now they're doing quite well - it was their second Game Demo Night (they do it annually) and people presented games and products onstage. They held it at Cogswell Polytechnical College so it was a proper auditorium with a screen for presentations. They also set up tables on the sides of the room for the speakers and sponsors, with nametags and posters. So if you had a question for a speaker, you could go up to them directly and ask.

Game Demo Night

Instead of Q&A after each presentation, they got all the presentations done first (they'd warn each speaker if they were taking too much time) and then just let everyone mingle and network afterwards. I thought this setup was really good and efficient. They also provided some finger food and juice at a back table.

Registration for the event was simple, too - just your name and e-mail address. It was an open event so they didn't care if you were IGDA or not.

I'd like this to be where we are in three years - a good turnout, interesting content, and lots of networking.

I'm going to the IGDA Orange County meeting next.

Yeah, I totally think we should have one. We'd need months in advance to announce it so people could prepare. Esp. students, though company presentations would be cool, too.

IGDA Silicon Valley only does it once a year and they have sponsors, so it's a big thing.

Another thing I learned last night:

I went to an event called Beer Wednesday - every week, game developers in Orange County meet in the same bar at the same time and go and drink together. It's not IGDA-sponsored, though the IGDA people go; it's really the invention of this guy named Jim (from Obsidian) who wanted people from different companies to hang out every week and drink.

I thought it would be like 20 of Jim's Obsidian friends, but it turns out any Wednesday can be between 60 to 170 people! And from different companies and universities, too.

It's open to everyone, and there's only one rule -you don't talk shop. It's not a business event, or even an official networking event - it's just friends hanging out. It just kept getting bigger and bigger, but it's all about informal friendships instead of business card swapping.

It was great to see so many game developers hang out like buddies and not talk about work (unless it was someone complaining to his buddy about his long day). The bar also hosts Beer Wednesday for free because they get so much repeat business - imagine a hundred people in your bar every week drinking a lot!

I thought it was a good idea, and even if it's just a couple of us IGDA people drinking regularly at the same place, informally, we might actually make a great environment for people to arrive and hang out with us.

This is actually what I've been wanting for us to have here. Maybe that magnet thing you guys have is a good start but the problem with that is just the transportation.

Maybe we should settle for a place where it is accessible and where game developers are abundant like in Greenbelt or Metrowalk. Can it be Fridays too?

Not to be negative, but the harsh reality we have is that Manila is more of "Game Development Outsourcing Industry" than a real Game Development from the Ground-up. The former consists of everyone and the latter are a few exceptions like Boomzap. Game Demo Night works if there are more of the latter. But with the abundace of the former, we just have no right to say anything about their work due to NDA and usual "business-to-client courtesy". We really do need real Game Development companies here that concentrate on original IP to make professional-level products to demo.

As for the Indie, well by all means let's get em! Just where are they? I hope our plans on the IGDA website would provide an avenue for this to happen.

To Indies out there... let's not be shy people!

Btw, Luna.

Thank you very much for all the scoop you've done. It's really great information on how to build up our Chapter (Yes I make sure it's a capital C haha). I hope was there too and all and experienced how the mature Chapters and Industries work and of course the people that you meet.

Keep us informed -- we miss you here!

I'm just glad someone is reading. Hahaha. Really. Because I still have some more things here to do - attending an IGDA Orange County chapter meeting, and then going to the IGDA Leadership Forum (where I'm supposed to talk chapter stuff w/ the Boston head). It is DEFINITELY POSSIBLE for us to get where they are. As long as we persevere and don't ever give up. So far that's the same advice I've gotten from everyone, everywhere.

I'm down with a regular meetup, and a game demo night (which can be an IGDA Kucha night again as well, if people can't necessarily talk about current games but can talk about other parts of what they do instead). Or we can have a game demo night only for indies and student projects.

I'm pushing for juliusc to do a postmortem of his Biomodd game, and gabby for their popcity game.

For the artists I'm thinking of doing a presentation of life as a freelance artist, and maybe we can bug chester ocampo to take us through his workflow.

I think we can keep up a monthly schedule of small events no problem, and just slowly grow the Chapter that way.

That is both awful and hilarious. Hahaha! We could actually do something like this even without coding - just have a Game Design Challenge meet where we announce a theme and everyone shows up with their pitches. Crappy games could be one of them Wink

Remember when I was talking to you about Unity? And how it was $200?

I'm at Unity's Unite 09 Conference this week. Today they announced that it will be FREE now.

The Pro version will still be $1500, but the version formerly known as Indie is free. And there are no additional restrictions added from Indie. You can still use the free version to publish commercial content. It just has a little Unity logo in it.

So all you small game developers out there, you now have an awesome tool to work with.

I was just caught by surprise when I attended the Unite 09 conference. I got to hang out with a lot of the Unity staff, and they seemed like genuine people that really wanted to see lots of people making games. Even their CEO was out hanging out with us regular guys.
