Description: Indies SIG

The Indie SIG represents the group of game developers interested in pursuing game development and distribution outside the standard channels as presented by the mainstream industry today.

For purposes of this SIG, an 'Indie' has the following qualities:

1. An 'Indie' has the intent to make a profit off their game.

2. An 'Indie' tends to go outside of mainstream channels to develop, market, and distribute their game.

3. An 'Indie' is not funded by an ESA or ESLPA publisher.

Mission: To support the understanding and proper use and protection of Intellectual Property in game development.

Our biggest SIG project was the publication of a white paper in 2005. Is it time to do a revision? Controversies over IP have garnered a lot of attention during 2009, so it could be a useful service to the rest of IGDA.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals work in every aspect of the video game community. Game publishers are increasingly exploring ways to integrate gender and sexual identity into games. Online communities of "Gay Gamers" are expanding, connecting, and starting to form a growing voice in the video game market. The game development community needs the public face of an LGBT SIG to responsibly address the issues of gender identity and sexual orientation as they relate to the games we make and the people who make them.

To encourage reflection, sharing and discussion among members of the gaming industry on ways to create and promote games that entertain while also having positive social aspects .

Reason/need for SIG

The Games Industry has matured and increasing numbers of Game Developers are no longer satisfied with creating games that merely thrill. They want the product of their work hours to result in positive changes in the real world. This IGDA SIG would provide a central location for all such developers to connect, share and learn.

The purpose of the Game Preservation SIG is to serve as a meta-resource, hub and community for those interested in digital game preservation and history. The SIG aims to be a one-stop-shop for all game preservation related news and projects, and will work towards setting standards and guidelines for assisting industry/academia in establishing preservation efforts.
