Herding Cats Doesn't Begin to Describe It: Reflections on 20 Years of the IGDA, 2:30PM - 3:30PM, West Hall, Room 3016

Twenty years ago, in the middle of a firestorm of criticism against video games caused by the release of Mortal Kombat, Ernest Adams asked several influential friends to help him set up a professional society for game developers. He didn't want it to be a union or a trade association, and he knew it would be a tough sell because game developers are some of the most libertarian, contrarian, independent and downright unsociable people on the planet. Today, Ernest takes a wry and humorous look back over the 20-year history of the International Game Developers Association with reflections on what went wrong, what went right, how in some ways it has exceeded his wildest dreams, and why we need it now more than ever.

IGDA Developer Satisfaction Survey

The IGDA exists to advance the careers and enhance the lives of game developers worldwide. To aid us in doing this, on Monday, 17 March we are launching an annual Developer Satisfaction Survey to update our knowledge of the current demographic composition of the video game industry, understand general quality of life and gauge developers' overall satisfaction with the state of the game industry and where it's going. The results of this survey will be released by E3 (early June) and will be used to assess the overall state of developers' quality of life, diversity in the industry, and job satisfaction in order to inform the IGDA on areas of action. For 2014 only, the survey also includes additional questions that reflect our Quality of Life survey conducted in 5 year intervals (2004, 2009, etc.). For more information, visit http://www.igda.org/?page=surveys.

Famous Missions Card Game

Thanks to the folks at Island Officials in New Jersey, the IGDA will be offering special edition starter decks* of their upcoming game, Famous Missions, for attendees to play throughout the week!

In Famous Missions, you have been picked to save the world by using some of the most famous (and infamous) people from history. Choose your candidate and defend your choice… to the death! Or at least, to the end of the round.

Mini Game (for 3 Players)

Goal: To be chosen to carry out the mission.

How to play: One player starts out as the judge. The judge will take the "mission" card and deal out 2 "person" cards to each player. The judge will then read the mission out loud.

The players will both choose their best "person" card from their hand and play it face down on the table. When both have played their cards, they will flip them over and reveal their choices.

The judge will look at the candidates and choose a favorite. The player who played the favorite will defend their choice, explaining how their famous person would carry out the mission.

Then the other player gets a chance to argue for their candidate, trying to sway the judge.

The judge chooses a winner.
