Ocotober Meeting Recap

The gaming spirit is alive and well at Penn.

The University of Pennsylvania graciously hosted the October 2007 meeting of the Philly IGDA. With an attendance in excess of three dozen gaming enthusiasts, it is clear that Penn loves games.

The evening's opening comments introduced newcomers to some of the resources available on the official IGDA site. A quick overview of the Philly chapter site, the mailing list, and the Google calendar was also given.

Penn students were encouraged to step up and take an active role in the IGDA and the formation of a student chapter at Penn. Dan Hettrick would coordinate with students interested in assuming leadership roles and assist them in getting officially established.

The two main projects on the Philly IGDA's radar were discussed:
1) Create the first installment in a pass-it-on style game development effort

2) Philly Game Jam - a 48 or 72 hour game development sprint where teams would be tasked with creating a playable game based on a theme announced at the start of the contest

THESE PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENTS WILL BE FOLLOWED UP BY POSTS IN THE PHILLY IGDA FORUM. You are encouraged to jump in and take ownership of these efforts. No one has to do a lot, but everyone needs to do a little to make these projects succeed :)

Following around-the-world introductions the evening's main speaker, Dhr. Phillip P Fuchs, gave his presentation on "Video Game Design in a High School" touching on points of game creation, game history and misconceptions surrounding computer science and IT outsourcing.

The evening ended with informal discussion and card swap. At least I think it ended. Actually it may still be going on since when I left at 10:15 there was still a number of people still there chatting and hanging out. I just hope they don't get locked in ;)

Thanks to all who attended for making this meeting a success.
