Director, New Business Development, Sony Computer Entertainment America
Owner, Secret 6, Inc.
Candidate Position Statement:
I entered the game industry 8 years ago through Sony Computer Entertainment America. Having no prior exposure or experience in the industry, I was quickly amazed at the energy and passion of my colleagues, as well as their unwavering dedication to their trade. While the game industry has reached tremendous size over the years, it is at a very different stage today than in any previous year.
In seeking election to the IGDA Board, my goal is to support new initiatives around the following:
- Programs to support our colleagues affected by studio closures and job cuts
- Encouragement of independent game development
- Continued global expansion of IGDA
Over the past year, the economy hurt the game industry. Publishers cut titles or delayed title launches; development teams and studios were reduced in size and sometimes shut-down. IGDA’s efforts, such as providing an option for health care insurance, offer relief for those that are in need. As an organization, we can do more. IGDA members consist of an incredible network of talent, with exposure to new opportunities that can be used to help others looking to return to the workforce.
Independent game developers are vital to the game industry’s success, driving new innovations in IP, game play, and technology. Events such as the IGDA Leadership Forum, aside from providing tremendous motivational value, opportunities to learn from industry veterans. Newly created, independent studios would benefit from further direction and support related to their special needs. Four years ago, I founded a studio and realize the challenges of starting a company.
As the video game industry continues to expand, we work with companies around the world, more than ever before. IGDA’s Code of Ethics is meaningful to me in so many ways: From the principles we agree to uphold, to the work place we strive to create, to the leadership we aspire to. By expanding IGDA’s global presence, teaching our Code of Ethics, we will create better working relationships with our global partners.
If elected, I give my commitment to abide by the ethical and professional standards set forth by IGDA, and to follow IGDA’s Mission in support of game developers and members globally.

Board Interview Q and A:
1. What do you see as the biggest challenge facing game developers today? What should the IGDA's role be in addressing that challenge?
The challenges facing game developers today can be viewed from two sides: 1) by game development studios, 2) by the individuals themselves. Today, third-party game development studios are experiencing unprecedented economic pressure to survive. Raising game development costs coupled with a changing user base has created a situation where publishers exercise extreme caution when green-lighting projects. The economic pressure on game development studios has caused many closures and layoffs during the past year. Individual game developers are challenged by the growing unemployment in the industry, creating a challenge to find new jobs.
IGDA must continue its efforts around education, tailored to the new economic situation. IGDA must keep abreast of how the gaming industry is evolving, and provide more opportunities to educate its members about trends, both in technology and business. IGDA's Leadership Forum has been a great venue for such purposes, and should be expanded to provide even more support to individuals and studios.
2. How do you expect to contribute to the IGDA Board? What qualifications or skills do you possess that will enhance your contributions?
With my role in business development, I continuously watch for emerging trends in the gaming industry. My goal is to support IGDA in a similar role, constantly evolving and expanding the support the IGDA provides to the industry.
3. How much time do you expect to volunteer to the IGDA? How will you manage this commitment?
Being an IGDA board member is an important role, that is occupied by individuals with full-time jobs and commitments. The common bond between those seeking election is a never-ending commitment to support the industry. I expect that position will require several hours per week, and more when planning IGDA events and attending board meetings. As with my other commitments, I typically schedule a regular block of time to dedicate to each activity. When the need arises, or for unplanned events, I use any available free time during the day or night to support the activity.
4. As an IGDA board member, you're often asked to get things done on a short timeframe and tight budget. What do you think a reasonable expectation of a board member's contribution is? How will you accomplish your goals as a board member?
A board member needs to be capable of leading, but also willing to seek advice and input from others passionate about the issues at hand. I am a good listener, and capable negotiator, which are tools to help me accomplish my goals. Lastly, regular attention to my responsibilities and careful planning help reduce the impact of tight deadlines and budgets. Board members must be willing to raise to the challenge of their peers on the board, providing the support required to resolve issues at hand.
