Facebook Flings Through the Industry?
It seems like that. It's been a virtual friend-fest of game developers the last few days. Unlike LinkedIn.com, the favored professional networking service, particularly among game devs, Facebook gets personal.
At first, I admit it was difficult to drink this particular glass of Kool Aid. Much as I talk about all kinds of stuff that others might shy away from, I didn't feel particularly comfortable listing my favorite movie (Blues Brothers), favorite band (Ray Charles or Sean Paul, depending on my mood) or favorite books (East of Eden) online. It's out now.
From a community perspective and a game development perspective, Facebook is actually turning out to be a pretty fascinating experience for me. It's like an MMO stripped bare of any mechanics that I'd traditionally focus on (like combat, character development or narrative development), so it allows me to see in a limited sense how communities grow, and how individuals grow their own communities and influence within those communities.
You have to drink the Kool Aid to see it, tho.
