A link for the developers out there... Birth Date Verifier is designed to keep children from surfing sites that they shouldn't be surfing. This article, Keeping Children Away from Adult Material; Time for an Innovative Solution, sums up the issue well:
"From a legal standpoint, this procedure is superior compared to simply clicking 'I'm over 18' which has become something of a national joke in the courts, and will likely not provide an effective argument that the site has made a good faith effort to exclude minors from the free areas. Requiring the user to age verify his or her birth date does a couple of things: Initially, in the event a minor submits a false birth date to gain access to the site, that will constitute an act of perjury, under federal law."

Today's Link Croquet is an open source, decentralized 3D interaction platform. In non-technical terms, think of it like Second Life except your world resides on your computer, not a centralized server. This could mean huge things for self-made environments, since each person would own their environment and not have to worry about outside terms. Croquet just hit version 1.0 last month, and while still not really feasable for the end user, it's a neat demo of online world paradigms to come.

Today's Link We're veering off the path of blatant "OMG SEX0RZ" flash games for a minute, and trying something a little theoretical today. Journey to Wild Divine is an interesting game. It's not played with a joystick, or a keyboard. Instead, you're hooked up to a machine that tracks your skin conductance, heart rate, and other biometric information, in order to tell how relaxed you are. As you learn to control these, the game progresses, teaching you how to be calm and meditative. This is really the first mass marketed, consumer level game to work on biofeedback (at least, that I'm aware of). As we start seeing more systems like this, who knows what will turn up in terms of sex games. Right now we're stuck with vibration, but once you can harness the heart rate, body temperature, and other metrics... Well, that exercise is left for the student.

Proving that games can smack you as much as they can vibrate you, the XShox controller is a project just waiting for gullible friends. Removing the force-feedback motor in an XBox controller and replacing it with a bug zapper, the XShox produces a shock whenever the controller would normally vibrate. As your character progresses through the game, he draws the attention of women, one of which he can pick to be his girlfriend. Should he later choose to change his girlfriend, a fight between the women ensues, and the player gets to play as the new woman in his life. While it's not the most sophisticated way to end/start a new relationship, it works in the context of the game's story and mechanics.

Today's link: FMV or full motion video was the "next big thing" in computer games in the early 1990's. Porn companies naturally got in on the action figuring that their huge backlog of video was perfect for the video game medium. I think that Blonde Justice was one of those games. If not, it's certainly representative of the AO games released at the time. Turns out, however, that people don't so much like their porn interrupted by periodic "pick your path" questions. Ultimately, such games failed, and FMV is (thankfully) long gone by.

In his comment to Ian Schreiber's Topic for Discussion, Jason said: "This is pretty much a sex simulator, except that (point) the sex is a gameplay element. The female character's affection for the protagonist is altered by his behavior during sex; finishing the act whilst leaving her unfulfilled, for example, will make her unhappy. Raising the character's affection level unlocks different costumes for her to wear (and remove), as well as introducing the possibility that during the sex act she may (randomly) offer to perform acts over and above straight sex, such as oral sex. Whilst the criticism could be levelled that the game treats sex as a performance, at the same time one must note that the 'difficulty' of the game is minimal - that is to say, after the initial 1-hour learning curve, it is difficult to inadvertently displease the female character."

He noted that "people my age are interested in sex, too," but the popular notion of sexual content in media and sex in games continues to hold onto the twenty-something stereotype. Consider shows like Desperate Housewives which features women in their 40's and 50's. The show is a breakaway hit, and its stars are considered, in a word, "hot". How do we attract the gray gamer? Today's link: Way back in 1981, Sierra Online, then known as On-line Systems, released the game Softporn Adventure. From Wikipedia: Softporn Adventure was a comedic, adult-oriented text adventure game produced for the Apple II in 1981. The game was created by Chuck Benton and released by Sierra On-Line. It was ported to MS-DOS for the PC in 1991. In the game, the player (playing a down-on-his-luck party animal) is required to obtain certain items that will allow him to win the affections of a series of beautiful (and sometimes not-so-beautiful) women. Although tame even by 1980s standards, the game was nonetheless controversial for its racy content, and it was also widely bootlegged and distributed among high schoolers. Years later, Softporn Adventure inspired the Leisure Suit Larry series of adult-oriented videogames, and the first entry in that series, 1987's Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards was a direct graphical adaptation of Softporn Adventure.

The Rez Trancevibrator was a third-party USB peripheral distributed for use with the game on the PS2. The trancevibrator would vibrate along to the music in the game, adding an extra level of haptics to the environment. The GameGirlAdvance blog first pointed out the sexual uses of this, in what is considered to be one of the first major articles on sex through video games. Today's Link Today marks the 23 anniversary of the release of Custer's Revenge, quite possibly the worst game ever. Custer's Revenge permanently colored the sexual content in games for years to come, and even today, it is still mention. Of course, the game had no actual sex, but rather sexual violence, which is quite a different thing all together. From Wikipedia: Custer's Revenge gained notoriety for its particular plot. In the game, the player controls the character of "Custer," a naked man sporting a cowboy hat, stylish boots, and a visible erection, obviously based on George Armstrong Custer. Custer has to overcome various (not very difficult) obstacles to achieve his goal, which is to have sex with a crudely depicted, large-breasted Native American woman who is bound to a post. The game's design prompted complaints and public statements from various spokespersons for women's rights groups (who felt that the image of having sex with a tied-up woman was a simulation of rape), anti-pornography activists, Native American spokespersons, and critics of the video game industry in general. Like many other video game manufacturers, Mystique went out of business and sold the rights to their games to Playaround. Playaround continued to market Custer's Revenge as Westward Ho for a time. They made minor modifications to the game, which included making the skin of the "woman" darker than originally, and having her extend her arm and gesture to "Custer" to come over to her. They also made a version of the game called General Retreat. In this game it is the "woman" who has to overcome various obstacles to have sex with "Custer" - who this time is the one tied to the post. Instead of arrows, cannon balls are fired at the woman. General Retreat has often times been hailed as the better of the two versions, featuring slightly less questionable material.

Huge increases in Chlamydia trachomatis, which can go undetected and result in infertility, have resulted in the disease become the most commonly reported STI in England in 2003. 2 Couple this with rises in genital warts (2% between 2002 and 03), syphilis (28% in men and 38% in women between 2002 and 03). 3 While figures of HIV have risen threefold to 3802 in 2003 through heterosexual intercourse, (74% of which were in the 15-39 age bracket), when compared to 1996, where less then 900 diagnoses were made. Away from sexual diseases a rise in teenage pregnancy and abortion rates are also on the increase, and can be linked in many cases to poor sexual health choices. Arise of 3.2% in the total number of abortions from 175,900 in 2002 to 181,600 in 2003. 4 With one in 10 of all babies born in England born to a teenage mother (5) and the under 16 abortion rate of 3.9% compared to 3.7% in 2002, the figures make depressing reading. The report is divided into five parts and thirty-five chapters and details most aspects of the pornography industry, including the history of pornography and the extent of First Amendment protections. The report also documents what the committee found to be the harmful effects of pornography and connections between pornographers and organized crime. Penthouse magazine also got in on the act and was featured in a Duke Nukem mod. Today's Link: ... and the flip side of the Gotcha flyer. Continuing the retro theme, in 1973, Atari released the coin-op game Gotcha. While nothing was particularly sexy about the game itself, the control mechanisms caused a stir. As you can see from the image referenced in the link above, the controls are two soft pink mounds that the player manipulates to play the game. Not surprisingly at all, the game became known as "The Boob Game." This link gives you an idea of what the game looked like.

Today's Link: The story of Mystique's Custer's Revenge. By all accounts, Custer's Revenge is a horrible game that would have largely been forgotten by now had it not been for the controversy it created. Mystique, it's publisher, had forged a place for itself as developers of erotic software. The little fold out that comes with the game reads, "Until Mystique, video games have been considered by many to be "child's play"... we at Mystique feel that it's time for video games and their adult players to come out of the closet, away from the kids and deal with ADULT fantasies." Of course, from a design and ethical perspective, what Custer got completely wrong was that it's just not okay to tie a woman to a post and have the in-game avatar rape that character as a "prize." It's probably one of the bigger, "What were you thinking?" moments in video game history. Mystique also produced other less controversial adult titles, all of which have now been largely forgotten.

When Illinois legislators pushed the sure-to-be-overturned-on-First-Amendment-grounds HB4023 through, Rep. Inspired by the talk of hidden sexual content in video games, today's link: If you're over the age of 35, chances are that you attempted to play a record backwards at least once. Why? To hear the allegedly evil messages that you'd never have known about if someone hadn't made such a fuss about them in the first place. Among my friends, it became somewhat of a sport. "Did you hear that?" He said, "Cake is good for you!" If you spend enough time listening to music backwards, you'll hear just about anything you want to. Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven contains the following lyrics: "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now In reverse, some claim the lyrics say: "Oh, here's to my sweet Satan. A little toolshed? Robert Plant went to all that creative trouble and right there at the end (or beginning, depending on how you look at it), the best he could come up with was "a little toolshed?" Undoubtedly, somewhere in the course of recorded music, someone did some intentional backmasking, and not just to mock the topic as Prince and others did. Likewise, surely some developers have left content on the disc, but those are far, far, far and few between. Nowadays, of course, we don't hear about backmasking. I wonder if someday, someone writing a blog about a new technology will link to this one and say, "Remember when video games..."

Wondering about the current state of video game legislation? IEMA's .pdf legislative tracker The Sex SIG does not support such regulation or censorship of any kind. "But they're just trying to work with the ESRB's system, no?" No. Much of this legislation actually makes it more confusing for parents. In Illinois, for instance, a new rating system will be put in place which labels games +18 if, among other things, any humans in the game get hurt. Conceivably, this could label games like The Sims and Madden's football series as 18+ violent video games while ultra-violent games featuring, say, robots instead of humans on the shelves. Furthermore, it's unclear who is actually going to be assigning this 18+ rating. So, what's 18+ at one store may not be 18+ at the next. Such laws undermine a system, the ESRB system, which has been praised by parents and the FTC alike.

There are numerous sexually themed games online ranging from the hardcore to passive erotica. However, it appears that sexual games are not being made for women. Despite an exhaustive search, none were found. I did find this link about two women who made a sexually themed game that they hoped would attract a more sizeable female audience - or at least not exclude them as traditional sex games do. The link it referenced, www.playskins.com, was dead. The "wayback machine" at www.archive.org notes that the site died on September 26, 2004. Here's the last incarnation of the site. Link is safe for T+. A related story in the Hindustan Times notes that women have a healthy sex drive as compared to men.
