Philly IGDA November Meeting Recap

Written by Ian Perera

Our November meeting gave us a chance to look at some of the games that came out of the Philly Game Jam 2009, as well as a recap of the event itself.  We started with the Game Jam recap, and the slides from the presentation are here:

Roundtable Discussions Recap

Our first roundtable discussion meeting turned out to be a success with a large number of participants and some interesting discussions. We started with a few words from our new Executive Director of the IGDA, Joshua Caulfield, who gave us an idea of the direction the IGDA was headed in the future. After that, we broke into our separate roundtables.

Game Demo Night Recap

Sorry this has come so late, but I hope you find that it was worth the wait. Here are the presentations from our Game Demo Night that took place in February, with links for some of the presenters.

February SIG Meeting Recap

So, we all got together in a chat room and discussed things. It was important. You should have been there. Next month, we'll have another one.

December 2008 Meeting Recap

The December Philly IGDA meeting proved to be another exciting meeting with a great turnout. Alex Horn opened things up by recounting his experiences at the Montreal International Games Summit. After hearing about the speakers and events at MIGS, I don’t think many would pass up an opportunity to make it to next year’s summit.

October 2008 Meeting Recap

The October meeting had a great turnout with more than over 3 dozen game developers, students, and enthusiasts, including a large group from Drexel (thanks to Hardik Bhatt) and members from the game development group at Penn.

Meeting Recap: Game Demo Night at Drexel

On July 30th, 2008, the Philadelphia chapter of the IGDA hosted a game demo night at Drexel University. Five impressive demos were presented ranging from full commercial releases to small student projects. Some highlights from each demo are presented below.

August 2007 Meeting Summary

The August 2007 meeting of the Philly IGDA was another well attended success. Big thanks to the FireWater Games for providing the conference room to host the meeting.

A recap of the night is as follows:

September Meeting

The September meeting was held outside of the Cosi coffee house near the University of Penn. We discussed episodic content, the evolution of content delivery and its effects on indie and mainstream development. There seemed to be general agreement that an episodic medium has several advantages including the ability to customize the player's experience based on information retrieved from previous episodes. This could be extended to evolutionary game design where play mechanics that are underused or frustrating can be dropped from future episodes.

We also talked about ways to improve the visibility of the chapter. It was decided that regular meetings were key to increasing attendance so we're going to hold meetings on a bi-monthly basis (more or less) and advertise upcoming meetings on the IGDA site and community sites.

Overall it was a good meeting and I look forward to meeting more of you in December.
