[edit] Proposal Outline
[edit] * Pros
E3 is a high visibility event with plenty of media - gaming and mainstream - attention
- In this context I think we can get mainstream attention by focusing on the idea that well-written games are less evil - more likely to be good for your kids, rather than rotting their brain or whatever today's boogeyman is.
An event in Los Angeles makes it accessible to Hollywood
- This is a great opportunity to provide valuable education to Hollywood writers
The WGA has tentatively offered support for the proposed event
- This is a huge pro
[edit] * Cons
E3 is big and noisy, and it may get lost in the shuffle
It may be difficult to attract writers to the conference/get companies to send writers early
As a new event, it's going to take a lot of legwork to get something like this off the ground
If it fails, it potentially sets us back a long way
[edit] * Focus
Focus should be on the impact writing has on games, how to maximize that impact, and how to synchronize with Hollywood. If the WGA is potentially footing some of the bill, we need to give them play in the content.
[edit] * Requirements
Space - Not an easy or cheap thing to find in LA near the convention center
Speakers - Speakers we can find. Speakers who have broad/headliner appeal may be more difficult. We cannot keep going back to the same few "name" writers again and again.
Support - This is going to be a doozy to support. We're going to need setup, registration, staffing, and all sorts of fun business logistics (I doubt we'll be able to make it free), and that's before we get into equipment, advertising and actually getting speakers in place. Also, what do we do on the back end - do we want to try to record sessions and make them available as a way of potentially recouping some of the costs?
Scheduling - If the writers' conference runs before E3, it may be difficult to get attendees in early. If it runs against the show, it may get lost in the noise
[edit] * Recomendations
Run around in circles and panic. Possibly scream.
[edit] * Suggested topics
Game writing - what does it bring to the table?
Crossing the barriers - Hollywood writing and game writing (and this can be spun as a "both ways" kind of deal - I'm sure there are plenty of game writers who want to get into Hollywood)
Writing dialogue for recording - how can we do this better? Interfacing with sound recording and voice talent
The vocabulary of cinematic writing - using it to write better cut scenes
