International Game Developers Association
(note: first part of this transcript is lost due to technical problems.)
wendy despain: instead of trying to do it entirely on our own
wendy despain: and since i think i hear the crickets chirping again, we'll move on to #5 - Beth, how is the Quarterly for GDC going?
Beth A. Dillon: Woot!
Steve Jacobs: Have a digital studio outside my door
Beth A. Dillon: I'm planning on having articles in by Dec. 1, edited quickly, then sent to J. for formatting.
Steve Jacobs: have done NPR regional radio for a while
Steve Jacobs: willing to help with podcasts
Beth A. Dillon: For the interview piece, I have confirmed: </b>Steve Ince, Leanne Taylor, and Andy of course
wendy despain: thanks Steve. We may have you be the host of our podcast segment.
Beth A. Dillon: Haris Orkin is doing the theme piece on cellphone writing.
Beth A. Dillon: Lucien Soulban is doing the main article on DS/Gameboy.
Steve Jacobs: Sounds good beth
Beth A. Dillon: If anyone has any ads/whatever else to submit, just send them over my way.
wendy despain: you're also including part of a chapter from the genre book, aren't you?
Beth A. Dillon: Oh yes!
Beth A. Dillon: I am
wendy despain: yay
Beth A. Dillon: I have that down on my notes, just forgot to mention it.
wendy despain: so it sounds like the content is all under control
Beth A. Dillon: Just need to wait on the edited draft to pull an excerpt.
Our Man in the Colonies: Sounds good.
wendy despain: about ads - Bioware expressed some interest in sponsoring the Quarterly, and AK Peters might also.
wendy despain: remind me one of these days and I'll give you contact email addresses to get in touch with the necessary people
Beth A. Dillon: Also have possible interviews with Evan Skolnick, Justin Leingang, Taras Stasiuk, and Mike Lee but I'll just grab whoever responds in time for the interview piece.
Beth A. Dillon: Okay definitely
Beth A. Dillon: Does anyone have topic suggestions for the next Quarterly?
wendy despain: and maybe we should put something out on the main mailing list - selling ads for like $50 each
wendy despain: some people have books they might like to promote etc.
Beth A. Dillon: Good point
wendy despain: hmm. next quarterly.
Steve Jacobs: How 'bout ARGs for the next issue??
Beth A. Dillon: That'd be interesting.
wendy despain: the ARG sig would probably like to be involved in that
Beth A. Dillon: Definitely.
Steve Jacobs: Writing Intensive to be sure
wendy despain: we could certainly just start going through the chapters of our books as Quarterly topics :-)
Steve Jacobs: I know!!!! One Paragraph from each chapter!!!!!!!
Beth A. Dillon: Heehee very true too!
Our Man in the Colonies: :)
Beth A. Dillon: Okay that'll get me rolling on ideas for future Quarterlies. Thanks.
Beth A. Dillon: Next?
wendy despain: sorry, just got a call that my nephew is sick today
wendy despain: so i need to go pick him up
wendy despain: so we have 15 minutes to wrap up :-)
Steve Jacobs: At the Vet's!!!???
wendy despain: hee! It's just a sick day at Wendy's house
wendy despain: anyone else feeling ill? come on over. we'll play PS2 games and catch ubgs
wendy despain: bugs
wendy despain: the real kind, not the code kind
Beth A. Dillon: Heehee
wendy despain: nephew is 3 years old
wendy despain: sorry, back on topic!
wendy despain: item #6 - conference materials
wendy despain: AK Peters made up a bunch of post cards promoting our books
wendy despain: they should be in my hands shortly (that's the theory anyway)
wendy despain: so if you're going to a conference and could spread them around liberally, drop me an email and I'll send you some
wendy despain: ok, books update - nothing much has changed since the email I sent out on Monday
wendy despain: any questions about the books?
Beth A. Dillon: Titles?
Our Man in the Colonies: When is the publication date of the new book?
wendy despain: the goal is to have Professional Techniques For Video Game Writing available in time for GDC
wendy despain: so that would be February-ish
Beth A. Dillon: Nice
wendy despain: and that's assuming the deadlines don't slide so far it has to be pushed back
wendy despain: the Genre book title was up for discussion on the mailing list
wendy despain: I think the final concensus was that they liked "Game Writing Through The Genres" but I don't think that's any less twee than what we already have
wendy despain: that book will probably not come out before the end of April, which will allow us to get content in there from games coming out in April
Our Man in the Colonies: Cool.
wendy despain: publishers understandably don't want the book to come out before the game does
Our Man in the Colonies: Alas, I have to fly... nice to 'see' everyone!
wendy despain: bye!
wendy despain: we're almost done here, but I do want to ambush Steve about the script library
wendy despain: I want to reference the online script library in the books
wendy despain: any chance it'll be real by February?
Steve Jacobs: talking with susan gold. brief chat in oregon last week. She'll be here in 3 weeks and we'll likely nail it down
Steve Jacobs: hope so
Steve Jacobs: When's the latest you need to know???
wendy despain: end of november?
Steve Jacobs: will push
wendy despain: thanks
Steve Jacobs: ok gotta fly
Steve Jacobs: catch y'all later
wendy despain: in theory, we'll be able to provide some scripts that also show up in the books
Steve Jacobs: that would be perfect
wendy despain: but we need the website to put them in
wendy despain: ok, is there any other business?
Steve Jacobs: ciao
Corvus: spater!
Beth A. Dillon: Hrm
wendy despain: I propose our next meeting be on November 29th
wendy despain: I guess that silence means no one objects
Beth A. Dillon: Sure
Beth A. Dillon: Heehee
wendy despain: thanks for coming everybody
Corvus: sorry, I was busy putitng it in my cal
Corvus: Hope Duke is all right!
wendy despain: thanks Corvus!
Corvus: give him extra skritches from a remote dog-lover
wendy despain: Duchess is missing him. she's not used to having to entertain herself.
Corvus: I bet
wendy despain: I'll do that
wendy despain: they're miniature pinschers
Corvus: aw...
wendy despain: yeah, big huge cute factor
Beth A. Dillon: TINY
Corvus: I bet my rescue poodle would love them
wendy despain: well, they love everybody so the feeling would be mutual
wendy despain: well, everybody who's not riding a bike
Corvus: heh
Corvus: we'll leave the brown bear at home then
wendy despain: ok, I must go rescue my ill nephew from preschool
Corvus: adios
