[edit] 2006 Whitepaper
Larry Mellon supplied useful framework document.
Consensus is that we should aim to develop the 'Framework for the Online Game Industry Bible' on the Wiki, inviting anchor contributions in each section from industry experts and then allowing comments and article submissions from the wider community within that pre defined framework. We will periodically produce printed, shorter white papers drawn from the larger 'canon' focused on specific topics. Content posted to the Wiki might form the basis for the monthly e-zines to the community and the podcasts being planned by Jonathan Greechan. E-Zines will push readers to the Wiki both to contribute and to be aware of the 'Bible' project. Potentially we can use the forums as sounding boards for opinions on various topics before committing an article to the Wiki.
The intended audience for the project is a person who is new to the online game development industry.
A recent statistic shows that over 90% of MMO Projects fail in the first eighteen months. Our aim with this project is to provide a body of knowlege of 'best practices' to help more companies succeed. The online games industry is one of the newest sectors of the computer game industry, which is, in itself, still in its infancy.
Although our key audience is Game Developers, the Wiki format also allows us to collate information of relevance to other sectors (press / analysts / investors etc.)
Our next task is to define the 'Bible Skeleton' and it was proposed that a Wiki page be established for the purposes of collaboratively developing an agreed content framework, along with suggestions for who we should approach to write the anchor articles in each section.
Larry Mellon will continue to spearhead this initiaitive.
[edit] Online Games SIG Website Top Page
Peter Freese was tasked with producing a new Online Games SIG top page, ideally within the Wiki format to provide a relevant and easy to navigate landing page for visitors to our homepage. This will be the landing point for E-Zine articles and the point through which the Bible project, podcast archives etc. will be accessed. We need to strike a balance between the functionality and flexibility of the Wiki with the professional, easy to navigate nature of the current page at igda.org/online
Peter said he would have something to show by September 1st
[edit] Podcasts / E-Zine
