Policy Exploration

As this fledgling wiki starts to gain popularity and content, the development of policies and guidelines can help improve the overall quality of pages, especially over time as maintenance is administered.

Since this is a wiki, its seems advantageous to let these policies and guidelines develop gradually and naturally over time. That being said, there are already plenty of questions that are arising as authors attempt to utilize existing material and conventions.

Each page and initiative can still ad-hoc as the wiki medium is so good at facilitating, but hopefully over time we can also develop some standards. With that in mind, here are some initial items for consideration:

Table of contents

[edit] Organization

[edit] Projects within this wiki

Should we consider forming semi-formal structure for projects within this wiki like they do in Wikipedia WikiProjects?

[edit] Page creation/maintenance

[edit] Linking well

[edit] Wikipedia recommendations

[edit] Good use of categories

Examples for consideration:

[edit] Labeled link or redirect page?

The question often comes up as to whether you should, in a given situation, use a labeled link (e.g. [[PageName|label for the link]] or create a redirect page that would have the same basic effect.

Normally, it's best to label the link, but sometimes, if the word is one that a user is likely to think is the name of the page anyway, it might make sense to create a redirect page and let the text link to that page.

Example:

  • On the Category:Stubs page, "stubs" is a regular internal wiki link to a redirect page called "stubs" that redirects to "stub". Alternatively, the link could just have been labeled to fit the sentence (as in: [[Stub|stubs]]), but since "Stubs" is a page someone is likely to look for, a redirect page was made instead.
