Corvus is stout, sturdy marsupial. He grows to about 1.3 metres in length, and can weigh up to 36 kg. He has a large, blunt head with small eyes and ears, and a short, muscular neck. His sharp claws and stubby, powerful legs make him a great digger. Corvus has lived for up to 40 years in captivity.

Corvus lives mainly in wet, partly forested areas on the coast, and on the ranges and western slopes. Corvus live in burrows[1], liking well-drained soils that are easy to dig in. The burrows, which are often built on the sides of gullies, can be up to 30 m long, and several metres deep. Corvus generally stays in the burrows during the day, kept warm in winter and cool in summer. If an intruder moves in on his territory, it will be discouraged through a series of snorts[2], screeches[3] and even a chase[4].

Because of settlement and agriculture, Corvus has been pushed into the rugged hills and mountains. As long as he remains in these areas, wild dogs and collisions with cars are more of a threat than landowners. However, because of his habit of wandering down to the flats to enjoy the tasty morsels growing there (knocking down fences on the way), his is sometimes shot at by farmers.

Corvus has also had to compete with introduced animals – such as cattle, sheep, and particularly rabbits – for food. This competition appears to have been a major factor in the decline of the northern hairy-nosed Corvus
