The Need to Know

Greetings all!

As the world’s largest professional association for game developers, the IGDA has been in a unique position to know and understand individual game developers on a level that most companies and organizations cannot. I think we’ve always had a very good pulse on how developers feel about their work and their industry, but we haven’t always been consistent in articulating that insight.

A decade ago, the IGDA partnered with researchers at the University of Western Ontario to conduct its first Quality of Life (QoL) survey, an effort to gain a much clearer understanding of the issues that affect life as a game developer – from “crunch time” to compensation issues. The QoL survey was repeated in 2009 and provided more insights into how quality of life is evolving in our industry. In addition, a few years ago the IGDA conducted a diversity survey to help us obtain a clearer image of our developer demographics.

So here we are in 2014, and it’s time to repeat the QoL survey once again. However, it’s time to take a different approach, one that is more consistent and systematic in how we understand our members and game developers worldwide. And it’s not just an issue of gathering basic knowledge for its own sake. More importantly it’s about knowing developers’ priorities and the most critical issues affecting their overall satisfaction, and in turn utilize that information to help prioritize our advocacy efforts and initiatives for our members.

To that end, on 17 March 2014 we’re launching a new annual research survey called the Developer Satisfaction Survey (DSS). The Developer Satisfaction Survey is the evolution of our previous survey efforts and is open to anyone who is involved in the video game industry in a professional or academic capacity is invited to take part in this survey, including professors, students, contractors, independent developers, and anyone else who has either a core or supporting role in game creation.

Here’s the link: The survey will end on 28 April and then we aim to release a high-level summary report of the survey’s findings during E3 (the week of 9 June 2014). And then in the following months, we’ll release more in-depth analysis pieces around specific themes, such as diversity, quality of life, and so forth.

So we really need your help! Please take the survey yourself and then help us spread the word far and wide via your social networks, chapters, SIGs, and everyone you can beyond the IGDA!

And then keep an eye open for the survey each year, as well as other research initiatives you’ll find on our Industry Surveys page.
