IGDA June 2018 Workshop - Narrative/Audio/Art and the intersection of Design - Zach Woolf

Posted By Administration, Saturday, June 23, 2018
Another great workshop was held with about 21 people of different disciplines coming and hearing from a veteran designer, Zach Woolf, who currently works at WildWorks.

Here are some of the rough notes from the lecture to hint at the great presentation that was give. It's like, I dunno, he's good at getting ideas across or something. :)

know your audience and your team
learn your constraints
how will your game stand out?
power of good morale
everyone is a designer

work with your departments
choice is nice for giving players the feeling of control

revisit all your mechanics often (like a regression test)
make sure your systems won't collide as they grow
don't sacrifice your pillars

get them to understand your vision early so that they accept changes easier later in visual, audio, and mechanical details
utilize QA all throughout the production

frame design meeting topics more tightly so you don't rehash stuff over and over
fail often, iteration reveals more details
playtest often after the visuals and prototype at least fills your pillars
meet immediately following any playtest - gather all notes, work with Producer, define direction ASAP

solid teamwork first
know what you don't know

Thank you to Access Salt Lake for sponsoring the venue. Check them out for all your coworking space needs!

Thank you to all the volunteers! Please look forward to the next one in two months!

Global Game Jam 2018 Report

Posted By Administration, Monday, January 29, 2018
Success!
I heard several of the 10 participants say they had a great time and want to do it again next year.
Everything was delivered and organized with no major hiccups thanks to great sponsors and volunteers.

https://globalgamejam.org/2018/jam-sites/ggj-usu-center-women-and-gender/games

Opening Ceremonies - https://www.twitch.tv/videos/222776272
Global Stream (39 concurrent viewers across the world) - https://www.twitch.tv/videos/223104473
Final Presentations - https://www.twitch.tv/videos/223457147

Although I am sad not to be back again personally next year, I believe Liz and Victor are now qualified to run any game jams there in the future and I hope the future activities only get bigger and better for more and more people who want to learn.

Watch for a summer or fall game jam like GGJ Next up there and game on!

IGDA Jan 2018 Meeting - Planning, Feedback, Elections

Posted By Administration, Thursday, January 18, 2018
Thanks for coming out to our first meeting of the new year! We first took care of elections and Josh Jones and Brianne Christiansen are once again Chair and Vice Chair. Other positions on the chapter board or in the organizing committee are available for appointing, all volunteers are welcome to apply! Then we talked over our upcoming schedule. This year we moved to Thursdays, and we are starting some workshops on off months where paid members can get expert advice and training. (The regular meetings are open door.) Then we talked about upcoming events like GDC, news from IGDA HQ, and shared announcements and had great networking among those in attendance.

Posted By Josh Jones, Friday, November 17, 2017
Thank you to everyone that nominated games and came out to attend the Utah Game Developers Chioce Awards 2017, and the Final Burn after party!
This event was made possible by Utah Geek Events (https://www.utahgeekevents.com)! Please check them out and consider volunteering to speak or mentor at their events!
We had about 16 people, with 5 studios and indie companies represented. We enjoyed the nicer Falls Event Center https://thefallseventcenter.com/location/salt-lake-city-ut/ space for the awards. Feel free to give them a nice review if you enjoyed the space! Thank you to the volunteers for providing our nice drinks and snacks for the event as well.
We tallied up the audience votes and found that the Audience Choice went to Crashnauts!
We announced the award winners:
Pushing Boundaries: The Irregular
Best in Show: Crashnauts
Congratulations!! We discussed plans for the new year, including an organizer open discussion meeting coming Jan. 11th for those that want to help and provide feedback to the chapter. Then after that is Global Game Jam on Jan 26-28th: https://globalgamejam.org/2018/jam-sites/ggj-usu-center-women-and-gender
Then we moved to the Desert Edge Brewery http://desertedgebrewery.com which had everything ready for us and set up Crashnauts and had a fun and relaxing after party! Thank you to Desert Edge for sponsoring prizes!
